If anyone seen this movie, what do you guys think of it? Is it blasphemous or suitable for Christians to watch?

It’s definitely not for the faint hearted!
What surprised me was how much my own mother liked it, despite the profanity. It deals with some interesting theological issues.
I’d probably add it to the list of films where you need to be strong in your faith before viewing.
As always, Alan Rickman steals all his scenes. Snoochie Boochies!

When it comes to finding something offensive, it depends totally on the viewer. Some Catholics would laugh out loud watching it, while some would get five minutes in and run away screaming. Both are probably fine people-but very different. What makes something offensive is so subjective.

I could see that. I myself am a huge Jay & Silent Bob fan, but this movie bugged me a lot when I saw it. I’m just a little confused as to how to feel about it

What makes something offensive is so subjective.
I’ve laughed at stuff my husband was offended at and vice versa.
I think it’s because we all interpret stuff a slightly different way.

A stupid or ignorant character gets more of a pass from me because you expect them to say and do stupid and ignorant things.

But a character who’s supposed to be sympathetic, I expect them to be respectful of my belief system and not say offensive things

But a character who’s supposed to be sympathetic
I think sympathy is death to comedy because it’s hard to laugh at someone you feel sorry for. You feel guilty and mean.

And like you perfectly said it’s because we all interpret things through our own eyes.

Wasn’t that George Carlin’s last movie?

I cracked up when they said he was the type of guy who would bless his own golf clubs…
The part about ripping on Disney World Empire boardroom scene was a little too close to home, it was so accurate. I hate to admit I was rooting for them.
It was a bent movie, with some actually thoughtful questions and perceptions…and yes, Alan Rickman was fabulous as always…

But I saw it looooooong ago…and probably would not revisit it.
I put it in the category of Constantine…

Nah George Carlin starred in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back which was after this movie. Sorry I watch a lot of Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes material lol

When I was an atheist, I loved Clerks/Mallrats/Chasing Amy/Dogma and watched them all multiple times. Now, I wouldn’t touch them with a 10 foot pole. Apparently I’ve changed a lot since converting 😃

Interesting. I love the Clerks movies and am a huge fan of Jay & Silent Bob. I’ve yet to see all the movies in the View askewniverse though

The only time I mentioned Dogma on these forums my post was flagged and pulled. It was on a thread about movies with Catholic themes. I said it in jest because someone had mentioned “The Godfather”. I thought Dogma was great satire but, like someone mentioned before, if you’re not strong in your faith, or you have the inability to laugh at yourself, you should probably not watch it.

Go to Amazon, and look up the 1 star reviews for this…thing. You’ll find mine there, handle “Saber Bob” but it was my second Amazon review, also my second “Treaclegloch” review, a CS Lewis/Screwtape inspired piece.

I’ve read it. Me personally, I can be okay with most of the movie, I just mostly have a problem with the ending when God is portrayed by a female actor, when He is the Father. Although Rufus (Chris Rock) and Metatron (Alan Rickman) make it clear that God isn’t a female, but is something else. That part just makes me uneasy, mainly.

It is completely a heretical message (we should not have dogma). But I really like this movie. I also like a lot of music that has bad lyrics. That’s the danger of entertainment.

My son loved the movie Dogma and now he’s an agnostic, away from the Church ☹️. I’m not saying there’s necessarily a connection, but maybe so. I have not seen the movie.

I think Kevin Smith is also agnostic now. His atheist wife probably had a lot of influence on him, though.

I’ve got it here somewhere, in my massive DVD collection, never watched it. At one time I got many PAL videos from Poland (I have multisystem DVD players and a PAL-compatible TV) on eBay and elsewhere for pocket change — the Polish dubbing/subtitles features are easily overridden. Dogma was one of those movies. Any movie that has Alanis Morissette in it would be interesting to watch.

Most fans of Kevin Smith will probably enjoy this movie. It’s a comedy and personally I didn’t find it to be among his better movies and the thing I remember most about it was the notoriously foolish Buddy Jesus. Lol

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Which when you think about it, does represent the thinking of some within the Church and how we should be marketing the faith to world. Lol.

Interesting. I’ve seen a review of someone who became less religious throughout his life and as he got less religious, he disliked the film more and more. Different strokes for different folks
