Dear moderator michael francis

I came on this thread to correct much of what went before. There is so much ignorance and myth about the Galileo case and its aftermath. And what kind of question did I receive:

‘Which point on Earth is the center of the universe? Toledo? Fresno? Albquerque?’

As far as I am concerned Moderator, contempt deserves ridicule and that is why I answered this joker accordingly.

Rather than pick out errors in the previous posts I simply offered this thread an opportunity to discuss this question in a scholarly fashion. It is after all the only time where the Church is supposed to have gotten a defined and declared teaching wrong. In other words if this is true, which 99.999% of readers believe it is, then the Church has no divine guidance.

Well said, cassini. I agree with you a hundred percent. There was not much substance in the discussion that was going on. I for one still believe the CC seriously erred on a defined and declared teaching and therefore does not have the guidance of the Holy Spirit. You came in to offer your assistance as someone knowledgeable about the subject and StAnastasia retorted with that insulting question. I think she(?) needs to live up to her moniker.

Because of Psalm 96.10:

  • Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously.
Galileo wrote the attached file in regard to the Biblical issue - the translation is from 1661, but it seems clear enough
Gottle, what is the physics of 300 billion galaxies revolving around planet earth?

Galileo was not the first to espouse the Copernican Theory and to be brought before the Roman inqusition.

Giordano Bruno, born Filippo Bruno (1548 – February 17, 1600) was an Italian philosopher best-known as an early proponent of heliocentrism and the infinity of the universe. He is often considered an early martyr for modern scientific ideas, in part because he was burned at the stake as a heretic by the Roman Inquisition.

Four hundred years after his execution, official expression of “profound sorrow” and acknowledgement of error at Bruno’s condemnation to death was made, during the papacy of John Paul II[citation needed]. Attempts were made by a group of professors in the Catholic Theological Faculty at Naples, led by the Nolan Domenico Sorrentino, to obtain a full rehabilitation from the Catholic authorities.

Bruno had a long list of heresies, however, and the actual reason for his execution is debated. (Wikipedia was the source for the above information.)

It appears that this was church dogma, inforced by the inquisitors, and it appears they asked some pretty hard questions.
Inquiring minds want to know.

Actually the Church never declared the earth was the center of the universe. It was a COMMON belief that it was the center of the universe but it was never declared by any Church Council or Papal statement of Ex-Cathedra.
hello Even Luther believed biblically that Copernicus and later Galileo were wrong, by the literal interpretation of Joshua,
Galileo real mistake was to say science defines truth, the Chruch’s posiotn is that Revealtion is of God

from these vss; Jos 8:29 And he hanged the king of Ai on a tree until evening; and at the going down of the sun Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree, and cast it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised over it a great heap of stones, which stands there to this day.
Jos 10:12 Then spoke Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD gave the Amorites over to the men of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, “Sun, stand thou still at Gibeon, and thou Moon in the valley of Ai’jalon.”
Jos 10:13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.
Jos 10:27 but at the time of the going down of the sun, Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees, and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they set great stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day. by these vss they believed the Sun moved around the Earth!

God bless,
johnnie o

Do you have any evidence to support this claim? The Reformers were all dead by the time of Galileo’s trial.
Nope, Luther, thought Galileo was way off, look it up.
Luther thought that it was heretical to contradict Scipture in which Joshua pray the sun and moon stop. Even the O.T. people thought that the Earth and Man being the centerpeice of God’s creation was the center of the known universe.

It was no dogma though

God bless,

Can I answer that? A mere thought by God. You see today’s Copernicans think they know the physics of the universe even though God told Job that such things are beyond the means of man himself.

Remember first the DOGMA of this thread - because of the NATURE of the created universe, man cannot determine if the sun (and universe) revolves around the earth or if the earth revolves around the Sun while rotating every 24 hours. Now this is a scientific DOGMA as well as a philosophical DOGMA. So, if man cannot know which is which - nor can he know the PHYSICS of the universe.

St Anastasia, you can ask all the heliocentric physics questions you like, but they do not apply to a geocentric model. No geocentric physics was ever completely theorised by man for the simple reason physics came in with Newton’s heliocentricism and the scientific world choose NEVER to formulate any physics other than for a heliocentyric one.

Now while there exists the dogmas above, i.e., no human way to determine either H or G, philosophically or scientifically, there is another way to determine an answer. REVELATION. This is a faith bound road to knowledge that does not need to be approved by humans -philosophically or by physics - before man can accept it. Heliocentric physics therefore cannot render this revelation null and void.

Actually, heliocentrism has been rejected long ago. The sun is not the center of the universe.

That leaves acentrism (there is no center) and geocentrism.

The isn’t the center of the universe, but the sun is the center of our solar system. The earth isn’t.

When I twirl about in my living room, the entire universe revolves around me – I can see it happening!

I wasn’t sure where this question should go! I thought in Sacred Scripture because that’s sort of what the idea was based on. I was watching a program about Galileo/Copernicus and it said that the Catholic Church had a dogma that the Earth was the center of the universe! I said I was sure that wasn’t true and I would look it up… but I can’t find anything! Does anyone here know?
But the Earth IS the center of the Universe.
It is the center of OUR universe.
Every star’s distance is measured from Earth.
No human can survive very long away from this planet.
Of course everything revolves around us!
You don’t hear anyone say that the earth rotated to expose the sun at 6:27 am in anytown USA.
Common sense shows that the sun “Rises” in the East and “Sets” in the West.
In the same way every heavenly body revolves around us. It is a commonly observable phenomenon.

OK the above is a little silly according to our current world view. But I post it to illustrate two points.
  1. To the ancients, the readily observable movements of the heavenly bodies along with no sensation of movement on our part meant that we were fixed and everything else flowed around us.
  2. We are fixed upon this planet for our very survival. Regardless of the mechanics of how the heavenly bodies fuction or how the universe is structured, Our universe begins and ends here on mother earth. Therefore the earth is really and truly the Center of our human universe.

Acentrism postulates no center. So God could have just put a label on the earth - center of creation.😃

Hi buffalo. I think all would agree that acentrists still accepts the sun is fixed and the earth orbits it while turning around once every 24 hours. You are quite correct is saying that acentrism leaves geocentrism AS A POSSIBILITY. And this is the crux of the whole Galileo affair/Copernican revolution, The Church of 1616 and 1633 was never shown to be wrong. This paradigm thus changes the history of the affair somewhat, don’t you think?

StAnastasia, when one has to resort to trying to be funny in order to argue a point then it is quite obvious to me that heliocentric domination you guys enjoyed for the last 250 years is beginning to look suspect.
