Doing a Good Deed Every Day for Lent

A man gave me a carrier bag last week.

I was pushing someone in a wheelchair with one hand and balancing food in my other, he gave me a carrier bag so I could carry it around the shop easier.

Very small thing but much appreciated, I prayed a Hail Mary for him after.

I never really thought of saying nice things to strangers as a “good deed”. I complement people all day long, “Your coat is lovely!” “Your highlight is spot on, what product do you use?” “I love your hair!”

Yeah, I am the lady who strikes up conversations with strangers all day long.

For those of us who are introverted, or have lifestyles where we spend all day not talking to people except by typing online or having an occasional work conference call, it can be a "good deed’ to engage somebody in a conversation. Like, the other night I chatted for 5 minutes with a convenience store clerk I’ve been seeing off and on in the same store for about 4 years. I like her and she’s always a very good clerk and also kind of a fixture given that many of the other staff have come and gone, also this particular store is near a nursing home where my mother spent many months and now her friend will likely spend what’s left of her life, so it’s really nice to see a friendly face because I’ve often been stressed when going to that store. But it took effort for me to strike up that conversation, because I don’t talk to people, and in fact now that the store has a self checkout option which allows me to skip the long line, I can do all my business in that store with even less talking.

For my part, I probably wouldn’t consider an online donation to be a “good deed” given that I make them all the time. I also probably wouldn’t consider doing a prayer or indulgence for someone to be a major “good deed” because I do those all the time too. The idea is to pick something unusual and out of your normal comfort zone.

I’m pretty sure my entire life could fit in 40 bags.

One thing I do is try to notice in particular who’s likely to get bothered by strangers. When I was riding the bus I’d look at mothers with unruly small children and say “oh, one of those days, is it?” I got so many relieved smiles - most people aren’t taking kids on the bus because they really want to handle cranky small children on the bus.

Often I see shopping carts left in the handicap parking because that person could not walk the shopping cart to the stall and walk back without the cart. Take a minute of your time and remove carts from the handicap spot! Say a little prayer to Jesus while you do it.

Love the ideas here.

You know what was fun to do? I kept a dime or quarter handy in my pocket and left it on the church sidewalk outside the door and when a child came out and found it, they had a huge smile and showed everyone. I think I had as much fun as they did.

It’s hard for me to find something specific to do on a daily basis because some days are really busy, also many days I don’t get much person-to-person interaction except via Internet.

However, it has made me be more aware of the need to do good deeds for others and do things when I think of them/ have the opportunity. It’s in the back of my mind even if I’m not sure I accomplish it daily. So I’d say it’s going moderately okay.

Even a smile given to the cashier at the corner market/grocerystore/restaurant/gas station, etc is a good deed. We can all use them. And smiles are priceless.
