Hi all,

I hope that this is the right section to post this. First of all, I would like to give you a little background on my situation. I just completed my undergraduate degree, and at my undergraduate university (a small public school), I was fortunate to be a part of a Catholic Campus Ministry group that allowed me to get into service a little bit. We took a service trip to Mexico/San Diego my junior year, and we also participated in a number of different events aimed at serving the homeless in the city where our campus is located.

Since graduating, I have just felt that something is missing. I have increased my prayer time and have found that fulfilling, but something still seems absent. I think it may be that I have not been involved in any kind of service for others since graduating. I am from a small town and have been living there this summer, and honestly I just don’t know how to get involved. I have tried to stay tuned in to what’s going on in our parish, but again, it doesn’t seem like there are very many service-related activities for me to get involved with.

I will be starting graduate school soon at Notre Dame, and I am guessing service opportunities will be more plentiful there. However, I would still like to hear of ways that you guys get involved, and I would appreciate some ideas to help get me started. Even if it is something that seems simple, I would be honored to make any contribution I can in an attempt to live out the Gospel. I really feel like my prayer life is developing, but I would like to round things out in this area as well.

Thank you all and God bless! 👍

A noble goal, OP.🙂

How about offering free tutoring at a local school?

Perhaps you can ask your pastor if he knows of any seniors that might benefit from a little help with yardwork. Maybe there’s a member of the parish who’s a shut-in and would appreciate a friendly visit once a week. Maybe the church building needs a little work. Maybe you could organize a parish potluck after mass. I used to sing at the ice cream social at the nursing home every Monday.

Start by asking your pastor. Then maybe ask some other leaders in the church – youth ministers, music ministers, ushers – they usually know a lot of people in the parish and could direct you to someone in need.

God bless you and direct you to where you can be of service.

Sorry that is has taken me so long to respond. I would like to thank you all for your time and wonderful ideas. I have really appreciated the hospitality and advice I have received at these forums. 🙂 Plus, they have led me to some very interesting reading as well! Take care everybody.

Have you thought about Priesthood or Religious Life?
A little bit…I guess that it is something I have just started to consider in a more meaningful way, and it is a calling I am trying to stay open to receiving. I think I am kind of in a period of truly starting to make my faith “my own”, and I have enjoyed learning more about it.
