Doing penance for others

I hope this is the correct place to post this query. If not then apologies.

All I was wondering was if we were able to offer up penances for the good of others?

We can do so for the souls in Purgatory, and I know we can pray for others that are living as the saints can, but does this extend to offering up penance for the good of others?

Yes, we can. And should.
 
Yes. My confessor actually gives the frequent confessees the bigger penances (ie: rosaries) to do them for other people.

No, you cannot offer up your penance for others.

First, you do not know their sins and the penance that was given you was for your sins.

You can offer prayers for the souls in Purgatory or offer a Plenanry Indulgence for the deceased.

CCC 1434 The interior penance of the Christian can be expressed in many and various ways. Scripture and the Fathers insist above all on three forms, fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, which express conversion in relation to oneself, to God, and to others. Alongside the radical purification brought about by Baptism or martyrdom they cite as means of obtaining forgiveness of sins: effort at reconciliation with one’s neighbor, tears of repentance, concern for the salvation of one’s neighbor, the intercession of the saints, and the practice of charity “which covers a multitude of sins.”

I think what the OP was asking was that if they could offer penances for others, not** their** penances.

Each Friday I abstain from meat to offer sacrifices to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the sins committed in this world. It’s a small thing but it’s something I can do.

I have not read Saint Faustina’s Diary. I was told that there is an episode in it where she prayed for the return of some who were far from God. She was told by God that they would return, but that they owed much penance and she would have to [and did] share in it.
