I read many things on the CF, but there is little if anything of consequence, discussing how to stop domestic violence and healing families or individuals who are victims of it. I have found that domestic violence and child abuse are among the most damaging and sinful things going on, as far as I am concerned. I firmly believe these issues need to be dealt with by the Church and Christians in general, a great deal more than they are.
I would also suggest that most of the time it is dealt with poorly and without positive results. Some of the problems stemming from this problem include: victims with post traumatic stress disorder, increased violence with each generation because prior victims repeat the behavior they lived with, poor employment, chronic health problems, resorting to drugs and alcohol as coping mechanisms, and the list can go on. So my question: What is your parish or archdiocese doing about it?
My own seems to be doing little that is truly effective. What kinds of things would you do if you had the means or ability?
I would: Create shelter for men and boys, because yes they are just as abused as women. Believe it or not it is about 50/50. Part of the shelter’s work would include counseling and relocation of victims in a manner that their abuser could not find them, even so far as to change identities. It would also (for men and women) include help with education for employment, and job searches.
All victims of abuse need to speak up more and be able to leave the situation they are in without fear of reprisal from the abuser.
