Can anyone point me in the direction of information on Third Orders? What is required, what is the main ‘feel’ of their spirituality? Not just on the above three, but any others as well.

search on secular, oblate, third order to find excellent threads with excellent links on this forum

Benedictine Oblates are lay persons, although diocesan priests can also be Oblates, who are affiliated formally with a monastery, meet on a regular basis for Benedictine prayer and spiritual direction, and assist in the work and mission of the monastery. They spend a year in formation and after a retreat make their profession, which is formally renewed every year. This is a promise, not a vow. Their formation focuses on learning to live the principles of the Holy Rule of St. Benedict – stability, obedience, humility, prayer and work – in their station in life. They are formed into deaneries, meet regularly with their small deanery group, and with the larger group for prayer, discussion, business meeting etc. Benedictine spirituality is based on the Liturgy of the Hours and lectio divina.

I can’t speak to the others, but the information on the Secular Franciscan Order, including a map with local fraternities that you could visit to get information or a feel for the spirituality, can be found at

Peace,

Thanks everyone. I always forget to look for old threads. Doing so now, I think I might be interested in the Dominicans, I like their emphasis on studying and preaching. This is just a thought for now though, I don’t know if I’ll persue it for a while.

Whichever you choose, just do it…your life will never be the same (in a good way).🙂

The reason I’m thinking of waiting for a bit is I’m currently in RCIA, and won’t even be confirmed until April 7th. Part of me thinks I aught to just be a practicing Catholic for a while (another part says I’ve been a practicing Catholic for a year, just not confirmed or recieving the Eucharist), part of me thinks I aught to persue this right now, and still another part of me says I aught to try living the life of a Lay Dominican for a while before I start the process.

I would agree with that. 🙂

It doesn’t hurt to look into it, though.

The SFO chapter I belong to had an, for lack if a better phrase, “all of nothing” approach to Formation…you joined when everyone else did, or you waited 2 years until the next group started. (The classes started in January; I called in December. One of the luckiest days of my life:D )

Thank you for this thread. I had not known anything about Third Orders until I read this thread and did a quick search on Third Order.

I came to this page:
members.cox.net/sfobro/page1.html

I am not sure how accurate the information is, but someone can help me verify. 🙂

Thanks!

There’s a new group of Dominicans starting up at our church I think, I think there’s a meeting either this Wednesday or next, so I think I’ll go to that and see what’s going on. I’d hate to decide this is something I’d like to do and then have to wait two years!

I am always attracted to Franciscan. I am glad I’ve just found out about Secular Franciscan, and there is one in my area.

Let’s pray for one another on this.
Thanks!

Sure! I haven’t finished my rosary today, so I’ll add your desire to be a Franciscan to that.

There’s a group of lay Franciscans at my parish. I’ve always admired their humility and simplicity. I’ve been thinking about redoing my bedroom into something much simpler (Just a bed, my bedside table, and a crucifix maybe) based off of how inspiring the simplicity of St. Francis was.

Thank you for your prayer. I will do the same.

That is a good thing to start.

Have a good night.
God bless.

Make sure that they’ll be following a “Rule of Life.”

Some 3rd orders tend to be nothing more than clubs who are more bent on taking trips to various religious places.

Thanks for this.

How coincident it was - today, I stopped by at the chapel of my church and prayed to God for this. After asking St. Francis and St. Clare for their intercession - I saw this box near the front door with many praying cards and books inside. I thought…hmm I should look inside to see if there was any praying card for me.

Within 5 seconds of looking, I found a praying card having St. Francis and St. Clare on the card. I was so happy. 🙂

Pray for me to know my vocation.

Thanks!

I’d like to bring this thread back again. 🙂

Today, I went to the first meeting at a Secular Franciscan meeting. It was a great meeting.

I’d like to thanks Rawb for creating this thread and ncjohn for mentioning Secular Franciscan order.

I think OP said he is still in RCIA, so I would also point out that membership in a secular order also usually requires a formal period of formation, usually a year of regular meetings. That could get to be a time burden so I would strongly urge waiting until after EAster, then begin attending meetings with someone for a while to get the “flavor” of the group before you make a commitment to formation.

Well I’m not in RCIA anymore!

The Dominicans are just starting in our Parish, so the next meeting isn’t until May. A requirement to join though is to have been a fully initiated Catholic for two years before you can enter the two year initiation period. I know the man who’ll be leading the group and he’s encouraging me to attend the meetings and “walk with us” until I can begin my intitation. That’s my plan, so I can get into the habit of the daily Rosary, mass when possible, Morning and Evening LotR, etc.

Congratulations water! 👍

wow, that is awesome, congratulation on your joining the Body of Christ with us!

Yes, I also encourage you to attend the meeting as often as you can. It takes time to discern your call. Yesterday, I met a gentleman who came to visit the meeting, and he told me he had been thinking about Secular Franciscan for 4 years and now he knows it is his call. Some other, it might take faster. Just pray for it.

One of my co-worker is a Secular Dominican.
