For me, I think it’s a good understanding of praxis, of joining study with real action, for it all to be meaningful. Ideas are great, but just batting about ideas isn’t nearly as satisfying as causing good to be done.

I have been cogitating a bit about how preaching enters into all this, what might work best for my ability.

Agreed. I have been trying to think about how to incorporate the Dominican call to teach along with the performance of works of mercy and since I am also a professor, it seems natural to try to use my talents of teaching and study to help others in that way. In the past my wife and I have volunteered with feeding the poor, etc. but getting in there to help people learn who might not otherwise get the help seems like a good thing to do. I am not aware of any ministry that exists to help tutor the poor and disadvantaged but perhaps they exist. I intend to speak to our chapter leader once formation starts in a couple of weeks.

And of course, RCIA team/sponsor involvement is kind of a no brainer for Dominicans in my view.

In the course of reading various things, I ran into mention of a Dominican priest who has worked out an arrangement at a local mall, to sit and talk with people. Pretty ballsy and out there, IMHO! But I can’t help but imagine that this is a very solid and productive thing to do!

There’s a youth detention facility in my county and perhaps that might be something I can consider.

Just came across an article on the Dominican Laity that I had not seen before. I’m looking forward to reading it. Enjoy and God Bless!

Well, we have our first meeting for those who are interesting in the Lay Dominicans tonight at one of the parishes in town. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and learning more about the process.

In Christ,

In Christ,
Well, we finally had our first formation meeting tonight and it went well. The lady who serves as the moderator is very nice and seems knowledgeable. There is only a small group but there are a few of us newbies that came tonight so hopefully the group is growing.

I have also remained in contact with Fr. Mele, OP who I had been talking to about the OP prior to my moving. He coordinates the John Paul II School of Lay Ministry that my wife and I just started going through so I will be seeing and learning from him there as well.

I hope that all of you are doing well and that God’s face continues to shin upon you!

Keep me updated about how things are going. Its great that we have this forum to share our common experiences and desires regarding the OP!

Take care,

Had our second meeting tonight. Me and about 5 ladies made up the group. Two are permanently professed (one of whom is the Chapter Moderator) and 2 temporary professed, and one postulant like myself.

We started off with a prayer to the Holy Spirit, evening prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours, and then moved into a discussion on the life of Saint Dominic and the beginnings of the Order. Most of it was stuff that I had heard before through my own reading but it was still nice to go through it with the group. My impression is that the content will become more detailed down the line after the initial period of inquiry.

How is everyone else doing? Hopefully well!

God Bless!

Received an E-Mail from the head of the priory, he’s a busy guy so it took awhile. It seems my wife and I will meet with him on December 17th to discuss the formation starting for me, and to see if my wife is interested.

Slowly but surely I seem to be on the path to joining the family.

That’s great! For me, the good things going on are an intensification of study on some substantial theological issues, and the preaching thing I think makes sense to go with it, and I can handle. I didn’t care for the daily breviary at first, but now I’m warming to it; at bottom it’s a way to ensure I pray each day, which has been tough for me to sit down and do.

Good for you! I am very glad to hear that things are going forward. 👍

I have now been to a couple of meetings of our local group and am enjoying the process.

One thing I inquired about with the Friar I have been in contact with is whether or not there are any Dominican retreat houses that one could go do a retreat once and a while. We have a Jesuit retreat house in our Diocese but for obvious reasons, I would prefer to go to a Dominican one if there is such a thing. Unfortunately, there are no Dominican retreat houses in north America but he suggested that he might contact a brother Friar (Paul Philibert, OP) to see if he might be willing to give me a directed retreat. Apparently Fr. Philbert is an incredible theologian who was quite close to being elected Master of the Order.

To say that I was blown away by the offer to pursue this for me is an understatement. I was shocked.

I am really falling in love with the Order!

Which prayers are you doing?

My wife and I typically do the night prayer together before bed…

Peace,

We’re trying to do this as well, my wife and I (not doing too good of a job lately 😦 )

Is it a normal thing to introduce someone and mention they are part of a third order?

For example, this is Bob. He’s a Dominican.

Someone was introduced that way to me over the weekend, by someone who just started formation with the lay Dominicans, so she may be just excited, but is this normal?

I do the morning prayer and evening prayer from this site. There’s a book, of course, but I need to find time to decipher how the book’s system works.

I also sometimes like to listen to the commentary on the daily reading here:

word.op.org/2011/11/15/
My wife and I use the same website sometimes. Most of the time we use Divineoffice.org. They both use a slightly different translation from each other but they are pretty much the same…

Keep working at it. It will come together. We prayed the hours only once a week for 6 months or so before we started trying to do it daily. Things take time. You two will figure it out.

Peace of Christ,

I would think if they know you are a new Catholic who is interested in such things, it might be. Other than that, it would seem a bit odd but to be honest, I have not met enough Lay Dominicans to know for sure.

With Friars, Sisters, and Nuns you can pretty much figure it out. 😃
