Well, I purchased the New Testament Bible and I’m done. Finito. No more books for me. 😃

This is actually my first Catholic Bible (or half a Bible). I have been reading the Catholic Bible that is on my iPhone and my Protestant Bible. :o

Very good! 🙂 Which one did you get?

Hello everyone,

I thought that people might be interested to know that the book below on the life of St. Dominic has a chapter towards the end of the development of the what was originally called the Militia of Jesus Christ, then became the Order of Penance of St. Dominic, then the Third Order, and now the Dominican Laity/Lay Dominicans. Its hard to say whether this one chapter is a good reason for you to buy the book in itself, but I did find it very interesting. There are actually some data which suggest that the Laity was the first order founded in terms of sequence. In his efforts to combat the Albigensian heresy, Dominic is said to have enlisted the help of the faithful, though perhaps in a less formal structure. The more formal creation of the Lay Dominicans can be seen in his later efforts to combat the Manichean heresy.

A couple of quotes from the text:

“…his institute was imperfect so long as it aimed at the salvation of souls only through the ministrations of preaching, or the discipline of convent rule. The world itself was to be sanctified; therefore, out of the world itself should be formed the instruments of sanctification”.

The third orders of Dominic and Francis completed the conquest of the world. They placed the religious habit under the breastplate of warriors and the robes of kings. They were like streams, carrying the fertility of Paradise to many a dry and barren region, so that the wilderness blossomed like a rose”.

“… we see the triumph and vindication of what we may venture to be called the primary Dominican idea-namely, that the highest walks of contemplation are not incompatible with the exercises of active charity and the labor for souls; but that a union of both is possible, which more nearly fulfills our conception of the life of Christ than the separated perfection of either”.

How awesome is that?

Luckily, St. Dominic is only calling on us to sanctify the whole world so we ought to be able to knock that out in a few weeks tops!

Talk about humbling and daunting task…

Here is the book:
The Life of St. Dominic

I admire the little Gideon’s Bible I’ve got, sizewise, the NT and Psalms. It’s King James.

Anyone know a comparable NT/Psalms collection, albeit in more modern language?

jwinch, are any of the books you have recommended in epub or Kindle format? I’m likely going to be going all digital soon to save space and money, so I’m interested in knowing if there are digital copies of said books.

No idea. Sorry! You can search in those formats on Amazon and B&N so you might give that a try.

Okay. I just purchased:

Praying with Dominic (Companions for the Journey)

Catherine of Siena: Spiritual Development in Her Life and Teaching - Thomas McDermott;

Saints Francis of Assisi and Therese of Lisieux, My Companions on the Journey: Book I (not sure how this series differs from Companions** for** the Journey)

So I have the Dominicans, Franciscans and Carmelites covered.

That should keep me busy for a little while. 😃

Thanks everyone for your help.
All the books above have arrived along with the Ignatius Study Bible. I started reading the Catherine of Siena book and I am super excited about the Bible!

Great news. I think you will be happy with all of them.

Peace,

Annnnnnnd Father came down with something today, so we had to postpone lunch for another day.

Ordinarily I’d be upset, but after some reflection waiting a bit longer isn’t a big deal, considering it took me six or seven years to get to the point where I knew this was for me anyway.

Plus side; 95% certain my wife is going to run with this as well, meaning that we’d be a Dominican family within the Dominican family!

I think it’s a reprint of a turn of the century (not this one, the one before) book. I wonder if it’s online someplace, it’s probably out of copyright. Then you could check it out more thoroughly.
It is online. Thanks,
