I am reading some works off the website from Dominican Fathers / The Rosary Center, Portland, Oregon, and was wondering if there ever has been a problem with their order. So far I haven’t come across anything (although I have only read a little). I was wanting to print off some articles to handout at a bible study, but don’t want to present anything that could possibly go against the Church.

All religious communities have problems just as the Church has problems. This is because both are made up of sinful men. We are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God.

Please note this sticky thread in the Vocations sub-forum, it applies here.

Orthodox Orders REMINDER

Basically it says;

Any religious institute that is in communion with the Church is orthodox.

So while there may be members of a religious institute that fall short one can not put that upon the whole institute if it is in good standing with the Church.

The Dominicans are in good standing and in communion with the Church.

The Dominicans are a superb order. Depending on the Provincial, they are allowed to celebrate the ancient Dominican Rite Mass. They are renown for their preaching abilities.

I have known many fantastic Dominican priests and Brothers.

Thanks for the great answer. This is what I was thinking also. I will read the articles to see if any red flags are there (with my fallible eyes) and have anything that bothers me checked out, before I hand anything out.

Were you referring to “problems” like those currently going with the LCWR?

There are indeed many wonderful, orthodox Dominicans…but that being said, there have been some serious problems in the Order in recent memory. The Dutch province, a couple years ago I think, published a document that suggested that even the laity should be allowed to consecrate the eucharist due to the shortage of priests! The Dutch bishops published a rebuttal…but I have no idea what happened to that province of the Dominicans thereafter…

This is the incident I’m referring to - wdtprs.com/blog/2007/09/dutch-dominicans-call-for-laity-to-celebrate-mass/

Yet I can’t find anything on what happened thereafter. Did the province recant? Was the superior replaced?

Why are you looking to find fault before you have even read fully the material that you have? Have you made up your mind to find something ‘wrong’? Surely if you are leading a Bible study group you would have heard of the Dominicans before?

The Dominicans in Portland, Oregon have the reputation as being a most solid center of Orthodoxy for the Northwest. They are likewise very open minded, humorous, and are quick to correct any excesses of any kind. That doesn’t mean, however, that there are those who in their own ways contradict whatever teaching by the good friars.

The theology that has come out of the Rosary Center is superb.

At about the time of Martin Luther, there was a Dominican priest (I don’t remember his name) who travelled about Europe selling indulgences. But then there was a lot of corrupt practices going on at that time. That was why the church needed reform. There are Dominican orders of nuns in Nashville, TN and Ann Arbor, MI that are very solidly orthodox. They dress in traditional habits and from what I understand both orders are “bursting at the seams” with new vocations.

MODERATOR NOTICE

Any religious order that is approved by the Sacred Congreation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life is “orthodox” as far as the Church is concerned. It is not up to us to pass judgment that is reserved strictly to the pope. Only a pope can pass judgment on a religious order of pontifical right.

Any furthers posts or threads of this nature will not be accepted and there can be infractions.

I didn’t have any preconceived notion. I have heard of the Dominicans. The article was lengthy and I am under a time constraint. I wanted to get the article to others in the group. The group is conservative and I didn’t want to give anything that was questionable. I first assume any order within the Church is trustworthy. I will read the article first and give it out later. Just trying to cut corners, which never is good. I thank you all for your quick response and look forward to reading more forums as well as articles from Dominican Fathers / The Rosary Center, Portland, Oregon.

One thing to keep in mind is that each Province is fairly independent. The Western Dominican Province of the U.S. (formally “The Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus”), which includes Portland, is known as being exceptionally solid. Some of the other Provinces of the U.S. have a…less stellar reputation.

In general you are quite safe with Western Province Dominicans. I know that here in Seattle they have a reputation as being the most orthodox of communities, and their parish here is absolutely wonderful. Experiencing an Ordinary Rite Mass with traditional Latin chant and polyphony is amazing, and they do it every week. 🙂

I went to the parish in Portland and it seemed very orthodox. If you like the traditional Latin you’ll definitely appreciate it; the Mass I attended was almost entirely in Latin, though it was Ordinary Rite. That seems to be the kind of thing you can expect with the Western Province Dominicans, when they’re not doing their traditional Dominican Rite Mass that is.

Peace and God bless!

Is the order orthodox? Yes of course.

Are you going to find pockets of craziness? Yes you are. People are human.

From my limited experience, the Dominican Province of St Joseph (CT, MA, ME, RI, VT, NY NJ, PA, DC, MD, VA, NC,OH, KY) is a wonderful, orthodox province.

In fact one of the new members of the the novitiate is someone who used to be an altar server at the traditional latin mass. When the Church of St Vincent Ferrrer had their Dominican Rite Mass, it was packed with TLM’ers. I say this not to say those who attend the TLM are the pronouncers of orthodoxy, but you know how difficult we can be.😛

Furthermore, I personally, would not be discerning the lay Dominicans, if they weren’t a wonderful order full of rich history of preaching against heresy and converting souls by teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I believe one day the Dominicans will be at the forefront of standing firm against heresies again. 😃

Probably a poor choice of words on the OP’s part - perhaps a better way of putting it would maybe be to ask if the Dominicans have many high-profile individual dissenters?

Old joke: The Dominicans were founded to combat the heresy of Albigensianism. The Jesuits were founded to combat the heresy of Protestantism. When’s the last time you met an Albigensian? 😃

There is an awesome Dominican parish in Houston!

Incense, altar rail, Communion by intinction, OF Mass in Latin, chant…it’s a CAFer’s dream 😃
