Like all religious orders, there are Dominicans who are priests as well as those who are not.

Yes they are, assuming you’re talking about the order founded by Saint Dominic. op.org/en

Beware that there is also a sedevacantist group that calls themselves “Dominicans”. Stay away. The Archdiocese of Boston has issued warnings to Catholics in the area that this group is NOT authorized nor in communion with Rome.

Ok is a Dominican Catholic priest Roman Catholic?
Almost always, yes. There could be some organization out there (like there is with Franciscans) with the word “Dominican” in their name, that is not part of the Roman Catholic Church, or Eastern Catholic Churches. So yeah, there is a rare chance that someone identified as a priest and a Dominican is not in the Catholic Church. Actually the Dominicans are known as Order of Preachers, have letters OP after their name. Not all Dominicans are priests.

Near me, there is a “Monastery” with “Benedictines” that have nothing to do with the Order of St. Benedict, or the Catholic Church.

If you are in doubt about a particular individual, check with the local diocese where he is.

In general yes. Father Serpa, the Chaplain at Catholic Answers is a Dominican. There is a beautiful parish in NYC (St Catherine of Siena) run by Dominicans, very traditional and orthodox parish. Beautiful Masses that use Latin and Georgian Chant.

Note: there might be a group calling themselves Domicans that are in Schism, like there’s are some Fransicans in Schism. I have an “Old Catholic Church”'down the street from me that has been in schism with the Church since Vatican I. Their priest says he’s a Fransican and even uses the same Fransican symbol as Roman Catholic Fransicans.

Just courious, why do you ask?

I’ve been corresponding with a Dominican who writes for Thomistic Evolution a Catholic Approach to Understanding Evolution in the Light of Faith.

He would be Roman Catholic, right?

Yup, and as a Franiscan, my particular brothers and sisters

Most likely he is a Roman Catholic, but why not ask to be sure ?

I did. I just wanted to be sure since this is the internet and anyone can say anything.
I asked if he was a Roman Catholc and he said yes, he’s a Catholic.

Is there a difference between Roman Catholic and Catholic?

If he said he was a Roman Catholic, take him at his word.

Is he a friar, i.e. priest ?

Or is he a 3rd Order Dominican ?

Jim

OK, I would take him at his word.

Jim
There’s an O.P. at the end of his name.

Also, I asked if he was a Roman Caholic priest and he said yes he a Catholc priest.

Is there a difference between Catholic and Roman Catholic?
Yes and no. Depends on what one means by “Roman Catholic”

All “Roman Catholics” are Catholic. However, not all Catholics (in communion with the Pope) are “Roman Rite Catholics.” While the Latin Church (Roman Rite Catholic) makes up the overwhelming majority of the Catholic Church, there are also Byzantine Catholics, Maronite Catholics, Assyrian Catholics, Coptic Catholics, Chaldean Catholics, please many others that are not “Roman Catholic” but are in full communion with the Pope.

Some Catholics do not like to refer to themselves as “Roman Catholic” because the “Roman” part was added by Anglicans in an attempt to Claim the “Catholic” name by calling themselves “Anglo Catholic.”

The Church officially refers to itself as the Catholic Church and references to “Holy Roman Church” or “Roman Catholic” are usually referring to the Diocese of Roman or the Roman Rite (which something like 99% of Catholics are part of).

I pray this helps

God Bless

But generally, Dominicans are only Roman Catholics.

If he were the sedevacantist calling himself a Dominican, he wouldn’t be open to talking about evolution.

Jim

Ok.

What’s a sedevacantist?
For background info: sede vacante is when there is no Pope. Such as the time between when the pope dies, and the new pope is elected. Literally, the Papal “seat is vacant”…sede vacante.

A “sedevacantist” is someone, or a group, claiming to be Catholic, who believes that the current Pope is not truly the Pope, and that the papal seat is therefore vacant. Usually, the group believes that there has not been a pope since before Vatican 2. They don’t recognize Pope Saint John XXIII and his successors.
