Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I’ve often wondered in we are obligated to give blood specifically because of its life saving quality. What do you guys think?

To the OP, it is certainly a good thing, and I applaud you if you are doing so.

I don’t think there are any specific acts of charity that we are required to do, but rather that we do good.

Acts of charity are required of us.
But the mode of such acts is ours to choose.

There are many people for whom it is difficult, impossible, or inadvisable for health reasons, or the impact it may have on their other responsibilities (even the “no heavy lifting for 24 hours” could impact, for example, parents of young kids or caregivers to elderly or infirm family members). There are other people whose blood is not accepted for various different reasons ranging from possible exposure to many different bloodborne pathogens, to various medical treatments they may have taken at some point in the past.

But for those who can do it, I think it is a good thing. The last time I did it, the person drawing my blood remarked (after seeing my previous test results), “Oh, your blood is going to save babies!” And upon querying it turns out I am both O-negative (which I knew), and cytomegalovirus-negative (which I did not know). So now I feel doubly obligated to do it regularly. Although I find that the “every 8 weeks” schedule it is a bit too much.

Something to consider with this question is that not everyone has good blood to donate.

I personally have felt obligated, since I have the most usable blood type. I used to be terrified of doing it. I had never had blood taken, even for a medical reason, until I was well into my twenties. One year, I made a promise that I would donate my blood as part of my Lenten penance. I was scared, but it wasn’t really that bad. Since then, I have done so regularly.
