Don't believe in God or don't like God?

I just noticed that many people I’ve met that are atheists don’t really have a reason for not believing in God so much so as they dislike the idea of God. That is, when I ask them why they don’t believe there is bound to be one answer that goes like this “God (in the Bible) did this and this and this. He doesn’t let us have abortions and sex, etc.”

Now I don’t want people to get angry with me for saying this, or offend anyone, its just something I’ve noticed. So my question is: If God did exists, would those who don’t believe in God be upset? And do you dislike the idea of God, or simply think its not true (or both)?

And for those that do belive in God, whatever your religion may be, have you ever noticed or felt the way I have about this?

God Bless and a good day to everyone 👍

Absolutely. What I hear the most is complaints that equate to: I hate your God because He tells me I can’t do things that feel good and/or are fun.

sigh It’s a wonderful, logical, completely well thought out argument really sarcasm.

The rare person will hate God because when they had a difficult time they perceived Him not to answer their prayer.

Which is why I find myself frustrated with Protestant churches that teach God will give you everything and anything you ask for as long as you ask with enough faith… it breeds an understanding that easily leads to a loss of faith.

It seems very sad but I think a lot of people let politics rule their life. Most people who are far leftist ( far left liberalism, socialist, communist) seem to follow this path. People of today are leftist 1st then God is last. Leftist mind set is a religion in itself. Only leftist ideas try to destroy the teaching of the Church. Abortion seems to be the sacrament of the leftist movement among many others.

I just wanted to add that sometimes I too have “denied” God, when really, I knew God existed, only I didn’t want to believe in him (for whatever reason, especially in hard time.) I mean this didn’t go on for long, but for a few moments I would feel this way. To be honest I feel so sad and stupid that I did that.

I think that if you keep lying to yourself, you eventually come to believe it (even though deep deep down you know your not being truthful.)

I’m not saying that all atheists are like this, but many I have come across are. So I wanted to know if this was a personal experience or a universal one.
One of the reasons I made this post if after reading something Philip Pullman (author of His Dark Materials…) said:
" But if there is a God, and He is as the Christians describe Him, then He deserves to be put down and rebelled against."

Although most of the people I know claim to believe in God, the few atheists I am acquainted with have never expressed any “dislike” of God. They simply don’t believe that any gods exist.

Well to me, that doesn’t even make sense. To an atheist, the Bible is just a book of myths and fairy tales. Why would someone have a real dislike for a fictional character?

You realize, don’t you, that the same argument could be used about those who believe in God?

This isn’t true, as you are putting all of us in one big bucket and labeling it ‘leftist’.
I’m a pro-life ‘lefty’, and my God and Catholic Faith absolutely come first, before all others.

I think most people who are in that atheist mind-set right now have been
  1. hurt in some way (even by an off-hand comment) by a Christian,
  2. only been to church once or twice,
  3. don’t even know what (or WHO) God is,
  4. think religion is all about “Thou shalt not”, rather than a life of love and joy
    and
  5. have the sin of pride, thinking that believers are “weak, stupid fools.”
Pray for them, pray to the Holy Spirit that their minds will be enlightened, and pray that you will say the right thing at the right time and maybe change their hearts.

There are several types of atheists. Some are atheists due to the science they read. You may not come across many of these because most people do not have a very good understanding of science in the first place so these types of atheists are more of the educated type. Some of these like Dawkins will talk about other aspects such as sex and an angry God but most will keep their arguments scientific.

There are other atheists like Hitchens that are Trotskyists and have an atheism as part of their political philosophy.

There is also a brand of agnosticism that tends to be atheistic that get that way because of a bad experience with a church or religious person or they are raised in a family that doesnt practice religion or allows their kids to choose for themselves and they drift away that way.

I think a very large portion of atheists though are atheists because of sex and partying. These people will try to justify their actions by getting rid of the law giver that restricts what they think they should be able to do whenever they want without repercussions. Sexual sin draws you away from God because it feels good and you dont want it to have to stop doing it. Instead of fighting sin they start to hate God. I know some women start to hate God when they get turned down by a man they like because they didnt put out. Sex is a deadly sin because of the emotions and feelings involved. It is hard to fight against since it can be addicting. Atheism for some is also about not wanting to be told what to do. It is an extreme reaction of the American challenging of authority that many like to do. Sex plays a big part of this since sex culturally is seen as a way of challenging authority by breaking a rule of the authority of the church.

It seems to me that Athiests are just Deists who can’t come to terms with a prime mover.

It is easier to come to terms with evolution than a prime mover. Alas, that is a banned topic for who knows how long.

Interesting, didn’t realize that. I’ve seen several threads on it, seems even the mods may have forgotten.

I had a response to clarify what I said, and hoped that I wouldn’t be pushing it, but I think I’m safer not posting, although I wasn’t referring to Evolution itself, that is simply a mechanism of creation, but rather more generally toward the process of creation itself. However you’re right, seems Atheism is a banned topic.

Hi Flame4,

I love the idea of God, but I don’t believe in him because, in my view, the evidence doesn’t indicate that he exists, and the philosophical arguments for his existence are inadequate.

If it were discovered that God did exist, I would be extremely happy.

Have you ever read Dr. Peter Kreeft’s 20 proofs for God? He’s a Harvard Philosophy Professor. I suggest you look him up.

Atheism is not a banned topic. Evolution is.

In that case my point was that science says that we live in a finite universe, that is it has a definite beginning point, however the belief is still that everything just came into being, that for whatever reason there was a singularity where all the matter of the Universe was collected and it simply existed. True science does not go beyond this point as there is nothing provable. Christianity in particular says that God created this matter, Atheism has no answer for where it came from because ultimately the question is metaphysical no matter what answer you give for it (I’ve heard Atheists say that the universe is infinite and cyclical, however the implication of that is that the universe is one giant perpetual motion machine, something infinitely improbable, more-so than the idea of a God as we know for a fact that we lose energy every day).

It is for this reason that I say that Atheists are simply deists (believing the universe to be a set of laws set in motion), who simply refuse to come to terms with the idea of a prime mover (An originating force of creation, a demiurge, which must have been present (whether in the form of a Christian God or not) at some point in a finite universe (and as I said, an infinite universe is scientifically as farfetched as the idea of a God)).

AS far as I know it’s been around as long as the evolution ban, and was banned for the same reason-discussions were apparently getting quite nasty. 🤷
Okay. I just apparently got an infraction right now for the whole bit about the catholic church refusing christian rite of burial for suicides until recently due to their ignorance of mental illness.

That to me, is nasty. I thought there were people here who actually were like JP2, and could admit to mistakes made.

That was a huge mistake of many made./

Since I don’t know the actual discussion I don;t want to comment either way on it.

The surface problem you’re presenting, about the Catholic Church refusing Christian rite of burial for suicides due to mental illness, was obviously a mistake, but not an unreasonable one; nobody really understood mental illnesses. At least the Church has changed her policy.

That being said, I don’t know what you said that ticked people off so it would be unfair for me to judge either side. 🤷

Anyway, it doesn’t really have to do with a ban on atheism/evolution.
