I was doing my examination of conscience, and I thought over some of the more recent things I’ve done over the past week. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized how I wasn’t sorry for doing some of my sins like breaking the rules and not going to bed at the assigned time my parents and I agreed to. 😊 I’m still really young compared to many people here, but I had stayed up reading when I was supposed to be sleeping. And I really wanted to read. I feel a sense of satisfaction reading the book, and I have very little sense of guilt for disobeying my parents.

There are others, but I’d rather not touch upon them. But I think I gave a good enough example to show my problem. I really want to be sorry, but at the same time I don’t. And now that I’m writing this I’ve realized that most times I’m sorry and went to Confession in fear of going to Hell, and not out of love for Our Lord. 😦

Having attrition for your sins is sufficient to be absolved in the confessional. Perfect contrition is what we should strive for, but we shouldn’t keep from confessing if all we have is attrition. Pray that God may grant you contrition for your sins, especially by praying to the Blessed Virgin.

It might be important to keep in mind that having sorrow for sin is not necessarily an emotion or a feeling, but it is an act of the will.

If you know that your parents have authority over you, and if you know they have a right to determine what time you should go to sleep, and if you refuse to obey them, then you should likewise understand that what you did was wrong. One doesn’t feel to that realization, they reason to it.

You don’t have to go around in mourning for your sin, but you do have to accept that it is not right, and you should will to regret this behavior since it is not in conformity with God’s plan.

I believe that if all of us who read with a torch under the covers when we were supposed to be asleep were seen as sinning it would be a hard cold world. Ofcourse you should respect your parents and they want you to get enough sleep for your studies, sport and other activities, but I don’t think it is the end of the world. Why don’t you try to re-negotiate a time for sleep with your parents, explaining to them that you cannot sleep without a short time to read to tire your mind.
Do you think that you are not sorry for this small failure, because it is so small in the great scheme of things. I am not saying you should not respect your parents’ wishes, but growing up sometimes means re-negotiating on certain agreed parameters as you grow older. Better to be up front with your parents so you both can respect each other’s word when it is given. But a great sin? I wish I had only that one to put to the Lord on my day of judgment.

Right now, you are experiencing imperfect contrition for your sins, and that is acceptable. As you grow older and more mature, you will realize the hurt and sorrow of your actions on others and then feel truly sorry for them.

Excellent post.

you are the sweetest little thing. As a teenager I could care less if I was disobedient. I wanted to be tough and bad. Ha-ha. It is excellent you want to be good. God bless you. Persevere. Do not beat yourself up. You are truly sweet.
