Don't I NEED the Eucharist now?

I’ve recently converted to Catholicism (55 years a Protestant). This morning, I read this about the Eucharist…“Indeed, holy communion is the most profound union we can have with God this side of eternity. God comes to us sacramentally on our alters at Mass and remains present to us outside of Mass in the tabernacle”…“It can help us overcome weakness and sin, guide us in our decisions, support us in our trials and sufferings, and enable us to grow in holiness”. WOW – and to think I used to think being pentecostal was exciting!.

My point is, RCIA classes don’t start until September. I will not be able to celebrate the Eucharist until NEXT EASTER. What can I do in the meantime? I really don’t want to wait a year before I can participate in sharing the flesh and blood of our Lord (not getting any younger here folks! )

The waiting period prior to receiving Christ is an exciting and an edifying one. This is a time for you to further prepare and make splendorous your temple prior to receiving your honored guest, who will be enthroned in the center of it. Pray, study, be generous, attend Mass in adoration, evangelize, offer up thanksgiving, examine your conscious, cut loose anything that is holding you back, build bridges to anything that can strengthen you.

The CC places great concern on entering into full communion into the Church. She wants you to know and appreciate what it is that you’re signing up for, so to speak. The Church does not believe that conversion is a momentary event in your life’s history. There is an initial conversion, but further conversion is a lifestyle; you spend your entire life doing it.

For starters, I would strongly recommend reading or listening to the tract “The Jewish Roots of the Eucharist”. Bon Voyage!

Instead of thinking of it as waiting, turn it around a little. Offer up the next year of your life to be joined with Christ in His suffering. Think of it as a pilgrimage that you are undertaking. And you can think of it as a HUGE gift you are preparing to present to Him at the Easter Vigil next year when you are received into the Church.

You are patiently trusting in Him and awaiting the Incarnation, just as Mary and Joseph had to wait 9 months to meet Jesus while He was in her womb.

I know some days will be tough as you make this journey. I’m a fellow convert as well. Welcome Home!

And as another poster mentioned, do not have fears or worries if something terrible were to happen in this next year, God forbid. God knows that you are being obedient to His Church, whom He gave authority on earth to minister the sacraments. He will see your obedience and would reward you exceptionally if He were to call you home before the Easter Vigil. Trust in Him.
