"Don't Lose Sleep Over It"

I can’t imagine an adult sitter with children of her own not calling you or 911. Did she hear your child crying or screaming from the other room? She may have been unaware that anything was wrong.

But to not even ask about your 2 yr. old’s condition is unforgivable.
According to her, the other little boy told her that he saw her “eat a coin”, but she seemed fine so she didn’t worry about it and she gave her lunch (which she says she ate but she obviously didn’t) and put her down for a nap. She claims she didn’t get hysterical until about an hour before I picked her up, so she didn’t call me. According to the packaging, those batteries can cause severe burns in two hours, but youtube is filled with videos of people expiramenting with putting them into hotdogs and the start sizzling within ten minutes. That’s what was happening to my baby during “naptime”.

OP, I certainly don’t want to make you any more anxious than you are, but is this something that will heal 100% by itself? If the answer is “no,” I’m going to give the advice I hate giving: Go talk to a personal injury lawyer.

I’d also admit that I’d feel a lot different about the situation depending on whether the babysitter was 14 or 27.

Does anyone have a short, easy to memorize prayer that they can recommend for this situation, to help me get back to sleep?
One of my favorite priests has a little prayer that came to him:

Jesus, I love you: posses me.

He prays it constantly, and it’s a wonderful act of self-abandonment to Christ. Maybe repeating it while you try to drift back to seep might be helpful.

It is healing, but we don’t know if it will ever go back to 100%. Her last scope looked really good. Right now, her insurance company is being cooperative, but if we have to get a lawyer, we will. She’s actually closer to 47. She has three teenagers.

I hope you can find forgiveness for this woman. Obviously it was a terrible error on her part but you’ve sounded so angry your last few posts, I’m most worried for your ability to forgive and the state of your soul because of this.

Very clearly, you all need time to heal, but I recommend praying for this woman daily, or every time you feel anger towards her. The more angry you are, the more you need to pray for her. Have masses said for her, ask friends to offer their rosaries for her. Don’t let this anger poison your soul.

I understand that something terrifying and horrible happened to your family, but the soul is forever, and you need to do everything you can to forgive this woman. It doesn’t mean you need to resume a relationship, but please try to forgive in your heart.

I’m sorry…forget about praying for this woman. She acted irresponsibly & should be made to account for it. The child could have died & no remorse from the sitter!

I’m afraid you misunderstand my post. I’m advising that Allegra pray for the woman primarily for Allegra’s sake, not for the woman’s. She may do whatever she needs to in legal respects. She does also however need to forgive her, and I’ve found that praying for those who have wronged you greatly helps in that respect.

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us

Forget about praying for this woman? Really?

Matthew 5:44 “But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you”

I pray for all of the people involved in this sad situation.

I guess you’re right…but I don’t believe the woman shouldn’t be made to realize how wrong she acted.

Just hearing about your child makes me really sad. I’m so sorry this happened, and I’m praying for both of you tonight.

How do you propose to force someone to accept what they do is wrong if they don’t want to? I don’t have the power to have her hung up by her toenails in the public square and while that would be painful and humiliating, it still wouldn’t make her think she was wrong. I’m mostly concerned with making sure her homeowners insurance pays the medical bills, which are already approaching twice the value of her home.

You could write her a letter & ask why she has not apologized or even asked how your daughter was doing.

People always say that and normally it’s not a problem for me, but lately it’s been a problem.

Long story short, I’m feeling very angry and betrayed by my children’s former babysitter, who allowed my daughter to be severely injured while in her care and didn’t even bother get her help or even call me until I got there to pick her up. My daughter was in the hospital for two weeks and suffered a great deal because of her negligence and during that time and until the present, the babysitter hasn’t apologized, visited my daughter, or even sent a Get Well card.

During the day I have enough things to do to keep me busy and I don’t think about my resentment, and I’m usually tired enough that I fall asleep right away at night, but when I wake up in the middle of the night for whatever reason, but especially when one of my kids wake me up, I can’t help but think about what could have happened, how my daughter might have been killed, how she might have been crying and asking for help the whole time she was at the sitter waiting for me to come get her, the permanent results of her injury, and I can’t help but get really mad and I can’t go back to sleep. Does anyone have a short, easy to memorize prayer that they can recommend for this situation, to help me get back to sleep?
Of course you have these feelings. It’s perfectly normal to feel angry and betrayed because you entrusted your child into the babysitter’s care and look what has resulted. What happened to your little one is very traumatizing. Reading this post and some of your others on this thread makes me wonder if you have a touch of PTSD starting (which makes perfect sense in light of all you went through). Hopefully it hasn’t gone that far and is still just generalized anxiety over the situation. Speaking with a counselor might help.

I can’t imagine the gamut of emotions you must be feeling. I know that if I had such an experience, I would be absolutely terrified to leave my child with anybody.

That said, it doesn’t surprise me that the former babysitter hasn’t made any “get Well” gestures or apologized. Seeing that your child was seriously injured, that there could be long-term ramifications for your child’s health, and that the sitter’s homeowners insurance is involved, she was probably told **not ** to contact you in any way, because doing so could be problematic for her and the insurance company from a legal standpoint. It’s not uncommon for people to be told by their attorney/insurer not to apologize, send flowers/condolences, etc because it can be considered an admission of guilt in a court of law.

Speaking of attorneys and court, I don’t mean to intrude here and please forgive me if I am over-stepping my bounds, but as a mom who suffered terribly in an accident years ago, I had legal counsel and received a settlement offer. I recommend that you do seek board-certified legal counsel on behalf of your daughter. You don’t know what the long-term ramifications for your baby might be because of the sitter’s negligence. And it really was negligent behavior. That sitter needed to contact you asap at the first mention that your little one had swallowed something.

(I say this because as a parent of many I had a similar experience with a toddler potentially having swallowed a small toy of an older sibling. We took said toddler to the hospital asap and luckily it was a false alarm. It wasn’t convenient, but better safe than sorry.)

I’ve been praying for you, your baby and family since I read your thread in the parenting section.

Prayers that have helped me when I feel anxious:

Sacred heart of Jesus, I place my trust in you.

Jesus, I trust in you.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.

Hail Mary

I pray that you find healing and peace. This is going to take time though. Maybe journaling your feelings might help. (((((Allegra)))))
