Naming Your Guardian Angel: Don’t Do It
by Dr. Taylor Marshall

You are not allowed to name your Guardian Angel. Some Catholics practice a devotion of giving personal names to their guardian angels. However, the Holy See does not allow this practice and formally discourages it. Read More]

I should imagine all angels already have names, and that it is within God’s remit to let you know them - as and when and if He so wishes - but no ‘arm twisting’.

I wonder if I have broken this rule.and My Guardian Angel and I have agreed on the name Ariel. If the Angel gives it’s constant to be called something is that a sin I wonder.

Obedience to the Church’s directives for our spiritual welfare is always the best choice.

I understand the Church’s position on this and will be obedient, but, with that being said.

We know from scripture and Holy Mother Church that God has given each of us a guardian angel to gently (and in my case, NOT so gently) lead us on the right path. If my understanding is correct, and please let me know if its not (as a convert, this was not really covered much in my learning), that our guardian angels are assigned to us for all eternity.

Having a name allows for a more personal relationship. We are encouraged to pray to our guardian angel that we follow the will of God and for his heavenly protection, why then should we not have a name in which to address him?

I struggle with this.

I think if the angel gives you permission to call it by a name it is fine. That is what I do with mine but she has chastised me many times for having thoughts of ownership

You are right though I am trying to figure out if I have am or am not following the Church’s teaching.

Oh and in my personal opinion and from reading some of the Saints personal stories I believe we have one angel that is with us for all eternity.

I seem to recall reading in one of Mother Angelica’s books that she named her guardian angel (Fidelis, I believe).

When I was little, I was told that (should I ever consider doing somethign wrong “evil”]) I should reach out my hand to the side and grasp the cloak of my guardian angel, and that my guardian angel will take my hand and place it in the hand of JESUS.

I fully expect that, if able, my Guardian Angel is going to puch me in the face when/ if I get to meet them (I make mine earn it).

I don’t see why giving your guardian angel a name can be wrong. Especially if you give him a tender name ( can’t think of 1 right now), but like the priest said yesterday and it is true, we must pray to our angel daily and conversation with him.

As long as Heaven is our eternal destination!
We must now let ourselves be guided by divine revelation in our exploration of the other mysteries of our salvation. We have now received a truth which must be profoundly important for every Christian that there are pure spirits, creatures of God, initially all good and then, through a choice of sin, irreducibly separated into angels of light and angels of darkness. The existence of the wicked angels requires of us that we be watchful so as not to yield to their empty promises. Yet we are certain that the victorious power of Christ the Redeemer enfolds our lives, so that we ourselves may overcome these spirits. In this, we are powerfully helped by the good angels, messengers of God’s love, to whom, taught by the tradition of the Church, we address our prayer:** “Angel of God, who are my guardian, enlighten, guard, govern and guide me, who have been entrusted to you by the heavenly goodness. Amen.”**

So the Church has forbidden us to do something, and speaks with the authority given to her by Christ, the authority to bind and loose, and so people will continue with private revelation and disobedience “as long as God/the angel says it’s OK?” God has said it’s not OK! Any angel who whispers in your ear that it’s OK is not of God!

Also, consider why it is not a good idea to name your guardian angel–you are implying you have authority over your guardian angel by giving it a name.

How did your guardian angel give you permission? Why would they like to be called a name other than the one God gave them?

👍

This is an important point and is covered in the article cited in the original post.

All through the Bible, those who are named get their identity and purpose from those who name them. All through the Bible, those who are named serve those who name them.

God renames Abram to Abraham and Jesus renames Simon to Peter. These get their identity and purpose from the one who names them and they serve the one who names them. God allows man to name the beasts in Genesis 2. This tells us whom the beasts serve and tells us about their identity and purpose.

It would be presumptuous for us to try to name our angel. They serve God. They get their identity and purpose from God. God alone gets to name them.
