I’m 39 and single and a convert… I’m always falling into mortal sins against the 1st, 6th and 9th commandments…and the sins of pride, anger, lust, and gluttony… And a lot of despair too…

I too fall into mortal sin often. This doesn’t mean I don’t want to repent or stop. I do. I pray to the Lord and ask him to fill me with the Holy Spirit to help me through my temptations. If you are truly repentant, God will forgive you. Even if you know in the back of your mind you will probably fall into sin again.

You are very normal for feeling these things. There is a reason that these things are hard to give up. I would keep praying, and try to “up” your spiritual life. For example, I have decided to start going to weekly confession and a few daily masses per week. I also pray the Rosary every day as well as a novena. This has helped me put a bigger focus on my spiritual life and not the secular temptations out it the world. Do I fail? OH YEAH! However, I have noticed a change in how I focus my day.

Perhaps you could try to make a small step to increase your time with God?

You could be Jewish or Christian and in just as much emotional turmoil. You have piled upon yourself more sin upon sin than you can carry. You need God’s grace, which flows through the Sacrament of Penance. Can’t stop sinning, you say? None of us can with out God’s grace. First, get into a state of grace, then beg the Lord for the graces necessary to avoid sin. Will it be easy? Achieving eternal bliss in the beatific vision is never easy, but nothing else is worth striving for.

Oh, and you can read the Confessions of Augustine, who struggled mightily for decades.

Prayer and fasting (within reason) will help. Consult a priest for guidance and ask Mary for help. Adoration, Stations of the Cross, Meditation on the Passion, looking at a Crucifix,The Brown Scapular devotion and the Rosary are very helpful.
Go to Confession frequently. You will receive many graces.
Ask the Holy Spirit for the gift of true repentance.

You are so human. Not to say mortal sins are OK. If you do not want to give them up, no one can help you. Humans do not like change or giving up sins they love.

I find it easier to tell the sins I hadn’t committed yet, lol,
John 14:27. Look not on your sins but on the Faith of your Church

Despair would indicate that you do want to give up your vices, assuming your despair is caused by using vices when your trying not to use them.

Despair will wipe out your love for God and replace it with fear of God, making it that much easier for the evil one to turn you away from God. Don’t despair! God knows your heart! Go to confession and talk to Him. God knows our flesh is weak. He wants you to be strong for Him. Love makes us stable not fear.

I believe your despair comes from falling out of friendship with Christ, which we all do from time to time because to be human means that we are sinners who constantly fall short of God’s glory. This is a reality, but not an excuse. 😉

Everyone of us has sins that we struggle with. God does not expect perfection, He asks that we come to Him and ask for His forgiveness in the sacrament of Reconciliation.

As someone who struggles with some sins myself, I have made it a habit to attend daily mass, go to Adoration weekly or more if I can, pray the rosary, and frequent the sacrament of Reconciliation as many times as I need to! This is what has worked for me. As I have said to others who are struggling, “Know your triggers and avoid them!!!” I need to follow this better myself at times! :o

One thing I need to comment on with all due respect. The title of your post “Don’t want to give up my sins and vices…” MAY say more than you want to admit. It would be like forcing a drug addict into rehab and expecting that they would be cured! If they don’t want it, it isn’t going to happen! You have to want it for yourself! Pray about it and ask God to guide you. Maybe seek some spiritual direction with a priest.

The world will tell us to do whatever we want in order to be happy, but it seems there has never been more despair BECAUSE true happiness can only be attained when we are in friendship with Christ! I hope I haven’t offended you.
God bless you and I will keep you in my prayers.
Peace and all good! 🙂

Excellent advice for everyone! With God all things are possible.

Jaysdec,

Your situation is unfortunately very common. Even Scott Hahn has advised us that when he goes to confession, he is finding he repeats the same sins. We all struggle with our humanity and the weaknesses of our nature from the garden of eden.

We are all in extreme risk of losing our souls as the society and world in which we live has made career fields wherein the goal is to desensitize us to what sin is and to know and follow an objective course to avoid sin.

You need to ask for help from GOD and HIS Mother and HIS angles.

I would suggest the following:
  1. Pray the Chaplet/Novena of St. Michael the Archangel. You can find Mother Angelica praying it every day on EWTN. It is very powerful.
  2. Pray the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel which was taught to the church by Pope Leo XIII and which we add at the end of each decade of the Rosary, but in this case “as soon as” you know you are being tempted, pray for St. Michaels help.
  3. Prayer the Rosary every day, especially around the time you find your being tempted.
Jaysdec, your are struggling with “powers and principalities”, and in turn you need to call on the power of GOD to overcome. We are to weak to succeed on our own without GOD’s help.

You need to arm yourself and fight back.
I will keep you in my prayers

Do not despair. You’re not alone in your struggles and feelings.

Do you have a regular confessor or spiritual director? If not make that your priority. They can help you and work through things with you. (Also they will be able to help you determine if you are actually in mortal sin - which may help with your feelings of despair.)

No way around this but to repent dear friend.
10 Commandments.
Not being in a state of grace is a terrible way to live.
Conversion. It’s a way of life.
As you have been advised, work with a priest/spiritual director on “avoiding the near occasion of sin”. Go to confession whenever you fall. Confessing not only absolves the truly contrite, but it helps us to think twice before re-committing those same old sins.
You just have to make up your mind.
Saying “oh, everyone does this” is kind, and charitable, but it really doesn’t help in the long haul. It’s your soul. Take care of it. You want to be in heaven with the Lord one day. Only one way to get there. Keep His commandments. I will pray for you. The struggle is real, and sometimes difficult, but the victory is sooooooo sweet.
God bless you.

Join the club, the human club.

We all struggle with sin. Ask Jesus for help via prayer. Also avail of the sacraments of the Church, especially Reconciliation.

Pray the Rosary and/or the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

We are not helpless against sin.

Thank you all. I’m starting to have a devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. And I do a daily spiritual communion…

Wonderful. We’re all a work in process…maybe invest in a St, Benedict medal. Sometimes just having a sacramental around is enough to prevent us from hurting Our Lord through our personal sin. Certainly makes us stop and think.
Be assured of our prayers!

Like I said…I’ve felt tempted to revert back to evangelicalism/nondenominational Christianity. But I now realize that I belong in the Catholic church and that the Catholic church is my Home. But I feel cold and I feel like a baptized and confirmed pagan…can you guys help me??? Thanks…
