Doom metal, anyone?

Is anyone here into good ol’ doom metal? I am, big time.

Black Sabbath, Sleep, Electric Wizard, Reverend Bizarre, Saint Vitus, Yob, etc.
 
Yeah I spent years as a middle-aged MD Doom Metal scenester.

Pentagram (US), Death Row, Trouble, the Skull, Revelation, Unorthodox, Place of Skulls, Backwoods Payback, Gates of Slumber, Earthride

Went to Roadburn a few times, Tilburg’s nice, awesome Catholic church across the alley from Popcentrum. I even went to Mass in it once (I wasn’t practicing much then) Also been to the annual doomfest down in Frederick MD a few times and a fest or two in Baltimore and one a guy used to have in Milwaukee area annually.

I’ve scaled it way back the last few years because I got old and tired and had a lot of personal stuff happen, and some of those bands broke up or people died or quit playing out for one reason or another. Also, I don’t smoke weed and never have, but I’ve never needed it to enjoy the shows, even when the bands are weed themed.

I thought you meant Doom the game lol.
Although I have listened to a few of the bands mentioned on occasion. They’re pretty good.

A lot of doom metal has Christian themes. There are a number of Evangelicals in the bands, and no one will dis you if you mention Jesus or pray for a deceased person.

I don’t know if your post was meant to suggest that doom isn’t pleasing to the Lord, but if we’re discussing it on here that means we don’t think he’s displeased with it. It probably helped get me back to Mass on a regular basis.
 
Ah - never been to MD Deathfest myself, but I’m a fan of Amorphis, Ensiferum, Kalmah, things like that. How about you?!

It’s been a lot of years and while I tried to avoid the bands that were really trashing Jesus or religion, I wasn’t paying much attention to lyrics in many cases as these were bands I’d see once or twice a year live and not be listening to at home in my (nonexistent because I was middle aged and working a demanding job) spare time. So I am not saying these bands are all great things for Catholics, especially those who aren’t old jaded rockers like i was, to be listening to. I do recall enjoying Asphyx, Bolt Thrower, and Immolation (who were well into their political phase and beyond their anti-religious phase when I first saw them). Plus that fest always had lots of doom bands like Electric Wizard and Clutch and some grindcore like Magrudergrind so it wasn’t all death metal.

It’s not my first choice very often anymore. But when lifting weights, listening to Rammstein is way better at getting the blood flowing than the Gregorian Chants from a French convent, no matter how beautiful that may be.

I like the idea of both doom and death metal, but never really get “hooked” by the songs. I prefer mid tempo bands with 2 min songs. MD death fest would be a huge committment when I’m just hoping to hear DF cover a certain song from a band I prefer.
 
Yeah, I wouldn’t go to it now either as it’s turned into this huge deal that sells out months in advance.

When I went, it was still a regional fest held in and outside a dingy rock club about 15 minutes from my house. You could buy a day ticket on the day of the show. There was something on the news about some fairly well known (to metal heads) bands from Europe playing it and I was like, these bands are playing in the street under the JFX (highway)? I gotta see this…so I got a day of show ticket, went down and saw the evening’s bands. Nice little fest and I went back the next two nights. Over the next few years it got huge and would sell out months in advance and moved half the show to large indoor clubs…not the same atmosphere.

The regional doom fests tend to be small fests yet and you get to know a lot of the folks who play and attend. Those are more my speed now.

I’ve never smoked weed or even had the inclination to despite frequenting rock/metal concerts and festivals. I do, however, always carry my rosary with me. In my experience, it’s not uncommon for people walking around, looking for others with weed to share. If someone were to ask me, I’d tell them that I have something better and show them my rosary. “No, I don’t know any Mary Jane, but I think that you’d really love to talk to our Mother Mary.”
 
I kinda like Type 0 Negative, I don’t know if you consider that Doom metal. Maybe its Goth, anyway it’s over the top and the drama makes me laugh. Pete Steele, the late singer and bassist converted to Catholicism before he died, too.
 
I love Type O Negative. They were definitely doomy goth. If you haven’t heard Steele’s band before Type O, called Carnivore, check them out. Politically incorrect humor abounds. Angry Neurotic Catholics!
