For those that think that Dorothy Day’s earlier years should call into to question her eligibility for sainthood, wouldn’t those standards preclude St Paul from the same honor? I think what is so encouraging about learning about many candidates for sainthood is what they have overcome in the past to live life of service to others. After all, isn’t Jesus’ message all about what we do next?

As to libertarianism , those that espouse it may be missing the point that, in of itself, it doesn’t require service to others to perfect it. And when the church talks and teaches about service, it doesn’t exclude from that requirement the need of our governmental institutions to engage in services that are contrary to many of the fundamental tenants of libertarianism.

I wonder if those criticizing Day have read her work? She was a thoroughly orthodox and pious Catholic. When she converted, she was totally obedient to the Church. She loved the Church and God with heart and soul. She was also a complete advocate for the poor and helpless in society. I believe she is already on the saints, and cant wait to see her canonized.

And for anyone interested in her worker’s movement - Im trying to get the catholic Worker’s group here on CAF going again. Ive just become involved with a Catholic Worker’s movement in Glasgow. We start each meeting in prayer, reading from the gospel, and a reading from Dorothy. Her complete love of God comes through in every reading.

This thread has been dormant for a considerable period. With rare exceptions, reviving threads after a protracted period of inactivity is discouraged because:
Code:
the issues that spurred them are often no longer "hot" or current topics, explaining why thread activity ceased originally.
posters originally involved in the discussion are sometimes no longer active on the forum and, therefore, unavailable to reply to comments added to the thread.
Our experience suggests that, when a topic merits revival, it is best accomplished by initiating a new thread that draws on recent events and can be posted to contemporaneously. This eliminates the baggage of folks being frustrated by asking and not receiving responses to issues raised in early posts (because the new poster didn’t notice that the post he was responding to was made a long time ago).

Posters are very welcome to open a new thread on the subject or any other topic, as well as to actively participate in the myriad active threads in the fora.

Thank you to all those who have participated in this discussion. This thread is now closed.
