The beginning of the bible I just bought says “Indulgences: Pope Leo XIII granted to the faithful who read for at least a quarter of an hour the books of the Sacred Scripture with the veneration due to the divine word as a spiritual reading, an indulgence of 300 days”- Preces et Pia Opera, 645

Just what the heck does this mean?

It means that if you read the bible for 15 minutes you will get 300 days off your stay in Purgatory

That’s not what it means. It means you receive the merit of 300 days of earthly penance. That merit is from the Church’s “treasury” of merit that has been won by Saints, Martyrs and Jesus himself.

BTW, this is not a D/R question, it is an Indulgence question.

My mistake. I was taught that many years ago in Catholic school that it shortened your stay in Purgatory . The CCC 1471 states what you said. It is temporal indulgence.

This is really a question of indulgences for nearly all Catholic Bibles post the papal indulgence in the front.

I’m sure indulgences are thoroughly discussed elsewhere in this forum. The assignment of days to indulgences has been stopped and now indulgences are listed a plenary and partial as many people thought the days were a reduction of time in purgatory, where there is no time.
