Are verse cross-references within a particular translation usually the same from one publisher to the next? I ask because I seem to have some erroneous ones in my Douay-Rheims. If you have the time and inclination, I’d love to hear from others that have a D-R about the specific examples below. Publisher details of your edition would be great, too.

My copy is by P. J. Kennedy and Sons. The copyright page says it is a reproduction, reprinted in new type, of the edition published by John Murphy Co. in 1914. I’m guessing it was printed in the 1940s but I’m not certain. Here’s what I’ve stumbled across: Ezechiel 4:6 -
And when thou hast accomplished this, thou shalt sleep again upon thy right side, i and thou shalt take upon thee the iniquity of the house of Juda forty days: a day for a year, yea, a day for a year I have appointed to thee.j

cross-references - i Num. 13:34, ***j ***Jer. 52:30

Numbers 13:34 -
There we saw certain monsters of the sons of Enac, of the giant kind: in comparison of whom, we seemed like locusts.
What the…?

Here is another: Ezechiel 5:13 -
***n ***And I will accomplish my fury, and will cause my indignation to rest upon them, and I will be comforted: and they shall know that I the Lord have spoken it in my zeal, when I shall have accomplished my indignation in them.

cross-reference - ***n ***Zach. 1:8

Zach. 1:8 -
I saw by night, and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees, that were in the bottom: and behind him were horses, red, speckled, and white.
Again, huh?

Now, I also have an old Confraternity/Douay translation which has Ezekiel as rendered in the D-R, so I compared cross-references. Sure enough, these two examples do not appear. (The Jeremiah reference is there.)

I also find Ezek. 4:13 cross-referenced to Osee (Hosea) 9:4 in the D-R and 9:3 in the Confraternity; and Ezek. 6:3 cross-referenced to Ezek. 36:2 in the D-R and 36:1 in the Confraternity. The D-R reference appears to be the wrong one in both cases.

On the other hand, I’ve noted a correct cross-reference, one of a series for Ezekiel 1:1, to Ezek. 43:3 in the D-R that has been dropped from the Confraternity, most likely for its similarity to another in the series.

This is just Ezekiel 1–6! God knows what else is wrong in this Bible. :ehh:

The Numbers reference is 14:34 in my copy; 13 only goes to verse 33.

That’s not a Douay-Rheims bible, is it? Numbers 13 in my D-R has 34 verses as does the online version here.

Your post sent me looking through various translations. Other than the D-R, they all have 33 verses in Numbers 13. I’m assuming like them, your bible has 16 verses in Numbers 12. The D-R has 15 verses in Numbers 12. Your verse 16 is my verse 1 of Numbers 13, which accounts for the 34 verse total.

Thanks for the Numbers 14:34 reference. That is indeed the correct cross-reference for Ezekiel 4:6.

It does have 34 verses. I missed the verse in the next column. And Numbers 12 has 15 verses.

It,s my great-grandfather’s 1853 bible from The Catholic Publication House, 126 Nassau St, NYC, NY

It’s 3"x6" by 2" thick. The print is small and the pages rather yellow, and my eyes are not the greatest anymore.

The footnotes are a collection of stars, daggers, double daggers etc, in even smaller print. Also the chapters are in Roman Numerals, so I have to check twice to be sure which one I have.

It does have all the family dates in it.
