Douay-Rheims Inaccurate?

Hello, I visited my Priest today at the monastery and he said that the Douay is inaccurate because it is old. He advised me to read the RVS and the New Jerusalem Bible.

Is the Douay inaccurate and are these versions better? I thought that the Douay was supposed to be a great version because it was based on the Vulgate; I read somewhere that St. Jerome had manuscripts that we no longer have and therefore was able to translate more accurately than we can now.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

I would not say that the Douay-Rheims is inaccurate but it is definitely old and has some pretty outdated language in it. That said, I would stick with the priest’s recommendation of the RSV-CE and the New Jerusalem Bible.
 
I cant help but wonder why a catholic priest would discount something “because its old”:confused:
If he uses this as a determining factor, then we could just say the Catholic Church is innacurate “because its old”.:rolleyes:

Sounds like you need to pin him down on what it is that is innacurate.

By the way, are you in a bible study at your parish? Is this how the topic came up? If I am being too nosey just dont answer that. :o

I’m getting ready for the Sacrament of Confirmation and I meet him at the monastery once a week for instruction and discussion. I do this instead of RCIA classes. He’s a great Priest and he’s very knowledgeable especially because he’s also a theologian.

To clarify:

He didn’t say that the Douay was a bad version but he said that he prefers to use more modern translations when teaching because they can be easier to understand and he also said that language has changed a great deal. He told me to still use the Douay but he said that there are more accurate modern translations. He said that he likes to use more than one bible when debating or teaching.

I was under the impression that the Douay was the best Catholic bible, that’s why I was shocked to hear him say that it can be inaccurate.

I cant be of much help to you with this, I have many versions and I like them all for various reasons. I was just curious.

It sounds like he’s simply taking the standard line of it’s old, so its got to be hard for people to understand. This is not the same as saying it’s inaccurate.

I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a catholic priest ordained post 1965 who has even read the DR.
