Hi Silver,

DR isn’t really poetic; it’s just old.

Maybe for you it’s “old.” But for those who are not afraid to tackle anything that isn’t ‘modern’ it’s poetic.

The English language has not improved since the 16th century. Its decline began in the 18th century and today it is pretty well at a fuzzy nadir. Modern English is rather dry and sterile. It has lost so much of its vigor and color. Maybe that’s why many prefer the older Douay and find it truly “poetic.”

What is the benfit of getting as close to the Vulgate as possible? Isn’t the Vulgate only a translation of the original text into Latin?

“Only”? Jerome was a linguistic genius. And he was much closer to the source. To pass him over in favor of today’s run-of-the-mill academics seems a poor bargain to me.
