Doubts and communion

Hi, I’m going through some very serious doubts about the Church, God…everything. So, I was wondering, how much doubt is acceptable to receive communion? I know that’s not exactly quantifiable, but I wanted to get a feel for what others thought. Currently (last few weeks) I have not been receiving communion b/c I feel that my doubts are too much…

I was always taught that the Sacrament of Holy Communion confers immeasurable Grace, so would personally receive Holy Communion. God loves you - trust in Him.

My spiritual advisor says to receive Holy Communion unless I am certain I have committed a mortal sin.

“Ten thousand difficulties do not make one doubt.” - John Henry Newman. It sounds like you do have difficulties but the fact that you know you miss the Eucharist means you are aware of Grace acting in your life.

Interesting question. Historically and culturally there have been different attitudes in the reception of Communion. Many Hispanics do not receive but attend every Mass.

One need not receive to fulfill the obligation. Except once a year during Easter season. Why would that even be worded like that if it were not something that people could choose to refrain from the rest of the year?

One also says “Amen” Which means “I believe” before we take God into our very bodies. We should mean that. If we do not, then we are lying. And that would be bad.

That is so.
And I guess you could say that absence might make the heart yearn to come back.
Still. it seems to me the OP needs MORE JESUS.
And, many of our saints experienced a dark night of the soul…or dry spells…and what they did was to persist in faith.

Have you heard of the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity? These are received in baptism and are supernaturally infused good habits of the mind or will which are infused into the soul, and each has God as their immediate object. Faith is a supernatural gift.

Communion is a Holy Mystery. We are not expected to understand it intellectually, rather we express our faith: our acceptance of the revealed truth. Although we strive to understand the revealed truth, we may not, however we can still assent to what must be believed because we trust in God.

As long as you are in the state of grace, you may receive communion. Having doubts is not a sin; seeking the answers to those questions and feelings is how we grow in faith and ultimately become even closer to God. You need the Real Presence even more now than ever; don’t skip Mass or communion, eventually everything will work out.

That’s why God gave us confession, to resolve our doubts and guilts.

As others have pointed out, one doesn’t need to receive at all, save for once during the Easter season. A spiritual communion, however, is always advised whether one receives sacramentally or not. The Catechism of Trent addresses this quite well.

To some temptations are expressed as doubts. To others doubts mean just that, that they doubt their faith in some respect.

I think it best for you to consult a priest in the confessional and let him help you thru this. He may offer some info that will clear some of this up for you.
