I need prayer, suffering from a lot of doubts. I frequent the sacraments and have been talking to my spiritual director about my doubts but I have increasing intrusive doubts about the authority of the Church.
I need prayer because I am beginning to wonder if by not examining these doubts I am rejecting my conscience.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of death.
Amen.

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the

Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

I have talked about doubts with my priest in confession and I thought he gave some really good advice. Basically, it was this - examine the doubts, really give them a good look and let God strengthen your faith by bringing you through.
It has worked for me, and I honestly do feel that my faith is stronger as a result.
God bless you and strengthen you,

What are your doubts about, specifically? You said about the authority of the Church, right?

Well, I think the Catholic Church has a very good argument as to why it is the true Church. If you believe in scripture, Christ breathed on the disciples, told them to receive the Holy Spirit, that what sins they forgave were forgiven. So, at that moment, Christ gave the disciples divine authority to forgive sin!

Now, with Simon, Christ renamed him “Peter”, the “rock” on which Christ would build his Church and that the gates of hell would not prevail against it!

Peter was further given the “keys to the kingdom”, a symbol of authority, told what he held bound on earth would be bound in heaven! What he loosed on earth would be loosed in heaven!

Then, read the Bible. Peter was the foremost apostle, always listed first. He spoke for the apostles. In the absence of Christ, he was their clear leader. What Peter said was considered final.

Peter had the first miracle of the apostles. Christ told him to go back later and strengthen his bretheren.

Now, like with Judas, when he committed suicide, he was replaced with Matthew. These positions would now be referred to as “offices”. When Peter was martyred, he was likewise replaced.

Christ left the Church with Peter as its head, in his absence. Christ asked Peter, and him alone, to shepherd his sheep…3 TIMES!

The Catholic Church is a system that was started by Christ, himself. It is the longest running formal institution in the world, having endured some 2,000 years, through persecutions, etc. We don’t think it’s by any accident.

In fact, I’ve heard of even non-Catholics who study it to try to determine the secrets to its longevity. Christ left the Church with leadership, never leaving it as an orphan.

Some other churches have since split off. There was one where Henry VIII headed his own, because he couldn’t get an annulment, also wanted more power.

Some 35,000 or so other denominations have since cropped up. Yet, Christ said he established his “Church”, not “churches”.

The Catholic Church is the original.

Others have tried to improve upon it, not wanting to obey the pope. They’ve gotten their own “popes”, but they just don’t use that word. Some have just man-made authority rather than divine at the root.

Some people now reject the pope, priests, and Church. However, when one rejects the representatives Christ gave by divine authority, one is rejecting Christ. When one rejects Christ, he rejects the one who sent him.

Explore your doubts. Ask your questions, but I think if you do, you’ll see the Catholic Church is well based in scripture, tradition and the rest.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Glory Be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning is now ever shall be world without end
Amen.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy, hear and answer me. Amen

Praying for you.

Remember St Thomas. He was no slouch…but he doubted. Imagine seeing Jesus, back from the dead, standing in front of you, and yet you doubted… I could have been Thomas. I have doubted or been skeptical or wanted more reasonable arguments… And what did St. Thomas do with his life? He must have helped a great many people find their faith.

God made all kinds of people. Some of us have very passionate hearts, practical talents, mystical understanding, and some of us have critical minds.

Just don’t be stupid and lazy and don’t let your doubts follow you to the History Channel. That would be a waste of a doubter. Be fair. Explore the truth. Find facts. Use common sense. And continue to pray however you can:

“Dear God, You made me. You know what I’m going through. Help me to see the full and true picture of faith, not just regurgitate words but learn your heart. Help me learn to learn.”
“Help me and my doubts enable other doubters to find their way back to You, oh Lord.”

Turn on us those pitying eyes of thine. Amen!

Praying that the Lord may grant you all necessary graces and remove your doubts.

Praying you will gain great understanding and not be burdened by doubts.

You have to deal with your doubts. God will not miraculously remove your doubts but He will bless your efforts to confront your doubts. Do research, read books on the topics that interest you, but always check the source of information (e.g. I only read books about the Church from believing authors) as there is a lot of negative opinions from non-Christian and non-believing authors.

You are in a trial of some sort, do not panic, i.e., keep asking God for help and in due time peace will be yours again! All of us, have experienced doubt (some worse than others), but as long as you persevere in prayer (read scripture, go to mass . . . ) all will come to pass!
