I hope this is the right place to ask this question…

I was wondering if it would be OK to download Youtube videos and put them on my iPod. Is it legal?

The reason is because they have some really nice videos of an Ambrosian rite Mass and the Traditional Latin Mass…😃

And actually I have another sort of related question. Is it OK to put CD’s and DVD’s onto my iPod?

Thanks.🙂

As long as what you are downloading from Youtube is not a copyrighted film. If this is something someone has recorded with their own equipment (you said a Mass) then I do not see any problem. Now it would be a problem if you download things like full length films and stuff like that. In other words it becomes an issue when you download something you would have normally had to go out and buy or rent.

As to your question about DVD’s or CD’s on your iPod - are they your CD’s or DVD’s? If they are yours there is no problem since you have already paid for them - you own them - there would be no sense in purchasing it a second time in iPod format.

Hope that helps.

As far as YouTube goes, I’m pretty sure most of the videos are in the public forum and I don’t see how that would be illegal. And the iPod was made for putting CDs and DVDs on there, right?

Thanks for the answers. I thought that was the case but I wasn’t sure. 🙂

Gizmo - yes they are my CDs and DVDs.

Edit** - I just realized that at the beginning of the Ambrosian rite Mass video it says:
By Theodore Schwalm
Not to be
reproduced
without
permission
I guess that pretty much means I can’t download it, right?😦

Though I find it kind of weird that I can watch it in the first place. I mean, I can watch it all I want on the web, but then I can’t watch in on my iPod? I also find it weird that somebody can put a copyright on the Mass. I thought the Mass belonged to nobody except God???

YouTube is liable for any copyright infringements so it is in their best interest to remove that which is even questionable as soon as it is brought to their attention. Remember that the author can change his/her mind, first he puts it up and then asks for it to be removed later so this becomes real tricky for the watcher or downloader. If you find out that it later becomes an infringement, then it is best to delete it from your collection if you have it.

That’s not the point. Classical music that is in the public domain is not copyrighted but any sheet music of it generally is. Organists are even prohibited from making copies so that they can read it better.

Same thing for videos. In this case it’s not the Mass that is copyrighted but the video of it is, if the author decides to copyright it. However, as I’ve stated before, YouTube takes the ultimate responsibility in removing unapproved copyrighted material off its website. If it’s there over a week, then I wouldn’t worry about it.

Ask for permission if you’re not certain. Many people would be more than willing to give it to you if you explain what you want it for.

Amen contact the the person who made it, they mostly just want to keep control of the material so its not misused and not to collect payments.

…and another dittos.

I was on another forum, music related, where they forbid the posting of any Youtube links in order to be sure that they weren’t aiding and abetting any copyright infringement.

I’ve thought about it and I agree that asking the person who owns the video permission to download it is the safest way to go.

Thanks for all the responses! 🙂

Since the person w/ the rights apparently posted the email contact address, I would make use of the email addy to request permission (be sure to explain just how you intend to use it in the email, as that makes a difference to a lot of people who can give/refuse permissions).

So–I wouldn’t give up hope about downloading unless you’ve contacted and have been refused permission.
