Downloading a game that is no longer sold

Dearly beloved 👋

Sometimes I just want to unwind and gun down space aliens from Hell. In DOOM and DOOM II, such reminders of old times long-past give me fun on an afternoon. I sincerely doubt that it can be found anywhere, since the original format was floppy disk, which is now pretty much defunct.

Since the game is no longer sold or to be found anywhere for PC, would it be immoral to download it for free on the internet?

There are Doom flash games you can play online for free. You can also purchase Doom games for Xbox and hand held gaming devices.

A very simple Google search turned this up in 10 seconds, so something tells me you never even searched if you could buy it…
 
Doom and Doom II are available for purchase on Steam, including their add-ons. Great thing about Steam is that it has all kinds of old games, independent games, and new releases. Never have to go to the game store again, just buy and download. They also frequently do major sales, like 66% off games that are only a couple months old. 😃

I confirm that latter part. You have no idea how much fun I have speeding at >180 mph in a cop car with lights and horns and busting the suspects, at 66% off (NFS: Hot Pursuit). 😃

The concept of “abandonware” is a very broad one and covers a wide range of legal possibilities. You will need to use due diligence to determine what company (if any) owns the copyright, and that company’s attitude towards what you are suggesting. It may take an email or two, but emails are free.

However, if Steam is selling the game, I’m pretty sure the copyright holder would object to unauthorized free downloads
