Downloading music; limewire, etc

I know people say it’s illegal to download music from limewire, etc. But, I want to buy an ipod/shuffle to put songs onto and someone told me they can do it for me , but I just want to do it the right way. It seems that this is the only way people download music onto their ipods. Is this a sin???
 
Actually you can download music for your ipod on itunes. You can also download free podcasts on itunes. You just need to be careful about your settings. The default download is an MP4. This is a video format rather than an audio format. This prevents you from playing your purchased music on a generic (and cheaper) mp3 player. Last time I used itunes, there are settings you can go in to convert the file to mp3. They will only allow for one conversion type so if you don’t have your settings right, it’ll bar you from converting it to an mp3.
 
I think if you buy it from the Apple/I-tunes or some other legitimate online retailer where you pay for it, and they distribute some royalties to whoever owns the copyright, then you’re fine. If you are downloading copyrighted stuff without paying for it, then that’s illegal.
 
Use iTunes - it is great. The danger of filesharing sites is that much of it is illegal and the risk of putting viruses and spyware on your devices is extremely high.
 
It is a sin to break civil and criminal laws duly enacted in your country/state/province. This means that you cannot download copyrighted music without paying for it. That’s the bad news.

Here is the good news: there is a lot of music that is available free of charge, and with a free license that permits you to copy, remix, and even redistribute it! A popular form of license that allows these options is called CreativeCommons. It is easy to find: just search the web for ‘Creative Commons music’ and you will find sites like jamendo.com. Stick with Creative Commons licenses for the most popular, accessible, clearly worded licenses. You will never be in doubt about what you can or can’t do with a particular song.

There is plenty more music available free of charge. New artists are dying to get their name out there and get their latest single heard by the masses. Consider joining MySpace to seek out new indie bands. Go to local clubs, find bands you like, and visit their own websites, where you can frequently find downloadable music.

If you enjoy liturgical music, you can find much free sacred music through sites like Corpus Christi Watershed.

Open your mind and search creatively! Stop listening to the radio! Or, stop letting the radio dictate what kind of music to like! You will never need to pay for music again!

Is it a sin? Copying something is not the same as stealing. However much the industry wants to claim you’re hurting them, the fact is that the rich are the ones who benefit from copyright laws. New and emerging artists tend to encourage copying and downloading of their material for free because it helps promote their work similiar to the way a radio station or MTV promotes different musical talents. Then there is the fact that until the Mp3, violating copyrights was often done without realizing it. Remember teachers making photocopies of worksheets? That violates copyrights. If you have sheet music and you make a photocopy of it, that violates copyright. Meanwhile there is this whole mess with Church music. There is this actually Protestant publishing house that prints Catholic hymnals. They have a tendency to take material in the public domain (its old enough for the copyright to have expired) and they change like two words, print it and demand royalties.

That said, I still think its a sin. I think we have to respect the laws of our country.
