Can you back that statement up with any factual information?

Dowsing does not fit into any of the categories of occult practises listed in paragraph 2116. It is not divination. Water witchers do not attempt to conjur up any spirt or supernatural power, they honestly believe it is an unknown natural phenomena. I knew one, who died a few years ago, but whom all the farmers in my hometown would use for well placement, in a very dry climate. Very interesting stories. He attended daily mass and was very religious his whole life. He would have been shocked to see someone even consider it a form a divination.

Well I do not agree with you. Dowsing IS a form of divining. It is NOT a natural phenomena.

I never said that was the motivation. I highly suspect that it was part of it. But the fact remains that the condemnation is very convenient to weed out pagans.

Divination was condemned in the Judeo-Christian tradition back when pagans were on the persecuting end, and were for centuries. Not persuasive.

I don’t think it matters. If they were bigger competition, all the more reason to get rid of them.

Satan uses all kinds of tricks to get people to follow him. He can even appear as a heavenly creature to get people to believe, and then he leads them astray usually through disobedience to the church.

I don’t know what negative effect my innocent dabbling in dowsing might have had, but what if I inadvertently influenced someone else to get interested in the occult? It’s certainly a possibiity and as such would prove demonic.

I think dowsing is a pseudoscientific activity somewhat akin to homeopathy, ‘theraputic touch’, and astrology. I don’t think it is as dangerous as some pseudosciences, such as the quack cures and treatments purporting to heal things like cancer and other illnesses you often see bandied about. Even so I think it should be discouraged in favour of more rational ways to extract water.

What is the definition of “divining”? Is it not a consciece act to conjure up spirits? Water witchers don’t do this. It may be bogus, but I assure you the dowsers believe it to be a natural phenomena. If thats what they think, by definition, it cannot be divining.

30 years ago I had to install a 189,000 gallon water tank and treatment facility. I needed 3 good wells in order to fill it up and keep up with the communities water supply. I drilled several times to find water but no luck. Believe it or not someone told me about this guy that can find water and tell you where to drill. He came out with that piece of wood and walked around the property and said drill here, here and here. Low and behold I found a great water source in each spot. I never looked at it as witchcraft or magic. I believe there is some real scientific reason for why someone is capable of doing this.

“Believe”, in the faith sense, and “scientific reason” should not be used in the same sentence like that.
