Dr. Drew has a show about Bruce Jenner. There are some transgender people in the audience who said that on CAT scans it shows that they have the brains of the gender they identify with.
What is the Church position of this, if its true?

From some reasearch I’ve read, there are differences in trans peoples brains. I cant link them with my kindle but you can find it by googling “are transgender brains different?”.

The brain builds itself according to the conscious and subconscious wishes of its director (host), and even the DNA (which affects offspring) can change according to this. This will not be fully known or understood for 10-20 year though, and the way things are going it will probably be suppressed even if found out tomorrow.

The Church has stated for decades that a person’s genes determines their sexuality. The changes in white matter (see newscientist.com/article/dn20032-transsexual-differences-caught-on-brain-scan.html#.VYy_IpVRG_c) could be a chemical imbalance that requires treatment as in Bipolar disorder. Sex change surgery and hormonal treatment would be like treating acne with cigarette burns. There has not been enough unbiased scientific research into the causes of gender confusion or the long term effects of gender reassignment. The significantly higher suicide rate of post gender reassignment individuals compared to a control group speaks to the need for further study.

But its not politically correct to speak of these things.

Here’s a couple of additional articles on the subject. One dating back to 1995; so studies regarding this topic have been around for over 20 years. The brain is an overwhelming complicated organ and a generalized statement that “the brain of transgender individuals is different” encompasses a great deal of chemical, tissue, and structural details. But the same verbiage seems to trend in several sources.

For me personally, it is about being compassionate and loving to ANYONE who feels different or has any issue with their self-image. That is right and just as a Christian, IMHO.

Yes, I saw that but also Dr. Drew himself said the suicide rate for transgender persons is higher after their final surgery. So perhaps that wasn’t the cure that was needed.

He also noted in a previous show it’s especially hard to ‘age’ as a transgendered person with hormone therapy etc.

I do really feel for those struggling with such issues for it seems to permeate their entire life.

May God be with al those struggling with transgender issues and may they seek a Christian alternative to self mutilation.

Mary.

Im not very PC. What if there are differences in their brains? Would the Church accept that finding, while not approve of the lifestyle?

I agree. Mutilation is not the answer.

What the article in New Scientist said was that changes in the white matter were found. There is no disputing this.

My conclusions are the presence of changes in the brain do not mean they are supposed to be there. No one would leave a schizophrenic without treatment because there are structural changes to the brain (and there are). The presence of an effeminate brain structure in a genetic male is a pathology, just like if a male grew large breasts or a female grew a facial beard, these would be treated as pathologies to correct, not as the platform from which to redesign the entire body and person.
