Dr. Greg and Lisa Popcak's Quiz on Healthy Relationship with God

I’m currently reading this book called Discover God Together: The Catholic Guide to Raising Faithful Kids from Dr Greg and Lisa Popcak (they are sometimes guests on Catholic Answers Live) and I was really enjoying it until I took a quiz in chapter 4 that is supposedly designed to evaluate the degree to which a person’s relationship with God is secure and healthy. After taking the quiz and looking at the results, I simply cannot understand the reasoning behind it… it fact, I’d say they have it exactly the wrong way around. Let me give you guys a few examples… every question is to be answered with a number on a scale of 1 to 7, 1 meaning you strongly agree and 7 meaning you strongly disagree (4 is neutral).

1. I just don’t feel a need to be close to God
2. I am uncomfortable allowing God to control every aspect of my life
3. I am uncomfortable with emotional display of affection toward God
4. My prayers to God are often matter-of-fact and not personal
5. I often feel angry with God for not responding to me
6. I am jealous at how God seems to care more for others than for me
7. Sometimes I feel as if God loves others more than me

There are 28 questions in total, but you guys get the point. Here’s the thing, at the end of the quiz it says “the lower the score, the better!” The lowest (and therefore the best) possible score you could get on the questions I posted is 7 (1 point per question) which would indicate an “absolutely secure and healthy” relationship with God. That means that I ought to be jealous, angry, impersonal, unemotional, uncomfortable, and feel unloved by God in order for my faith to be “secure”.

Now, my initial reaction is that this is a typo, but for that to be the case there would have to multiple mistakes in the quiz and not just one or a couple. There is only one thing they wrote about the quiz that I agreed with: “most people are surprised by the results.”

Has anyone read this book? Or does anyone understand the reasoning behind the quiz? This has really shaken my trust in the information I’m reading in the book.

All quizzes that are supposed to give you insight about yourself be them online (which Disney princess are you?) or in print ( what type of Cosmo lover are you?). Are hooey.

It’s a typo. It should be “1 = strongly disagree” and “7 = strongly agree” if the lower score is better. They may have meant to say “the higher the score the better” OR they got the number values mixed up. This is why you see “[such-n-such book] 2nd Edition” and so on. It’s not easy to write a book that has no mistakes in it. I blog mere paragraphs and find mistakes ALL THE TIME in my own writing.
