Over the years, James White of Alpha & Omega ministries has, along with his pals such as Eric Svendsen, Jason Engwer and James Swan (among others) have debated many Catholics on subjects ranging from sola scriptura to the papacy to all things Marian and more.

I’ve listened to most of these debates or read the transcripts - often more than once - and although I am a Catholic, I can’t help walking away from these debates thinking that the non-Catholics came out on the short end of the stick.

Now, to be fair, I think James White and Co. have had better success against less skilled Catholic apologists (less skilled in debate strategy and tactics, that is), but against Madrid, Sungenis, Matatics, Bonocore and other Catholics, the clashes have not gone well for the non-Catholic side.

So, why do they do it? 🤷

They’re convinced they’re right in principle?
They’re convinced they actually won these debates?
They need to drive up revenue from book and tape sales?

Randy,
These guys are far and away better than so many of the other a-Cs out there. these guys, IMO actually do something other than bash the Catholic faith. They tend to produce messages about salvation and Christian living that are applicable to all believers. Having talked to at least one or two of this group here on CAF, I have not found the vitriolic polemics that we see in certain others. Personally, I am gratified by that, even though we still disagree.

My thinking is that their issues with our most holy faith is more honestly theological than some others. 🤷

Beyond that, I have no insights into their motivations. You probably know them all better than I do. 🙂

This sounds right to me, CM.

Hello Randy Carson.

I’ve done this and came to the same conclusions as well.

I’m not sure why these anti-Catholics do it but it sure has helped me understand my Catholic faith much better—thank you Mr. White, etc.

I know their anti-Catholic spirituality/”apologetics” can also hurt someone else too so I am not saying the anti-Catholic polemics are objectively good.

If anti-Catholics cannot see the truth of the Catholic faith when provided with such good answers (by well prepared Catholic apologists), it really serves as an example how deep spiritual blindness can go. You could almost use this concept as an example to a materialist as an apologetic for the spiritual world (“Look at these facts. Look at what James White or whomever thinks in spite of all of these facts. Do you now see at least the concept of ‘spiritual blindness’ being lived out by Mr. White in these examples?”)

I’d love to see James White working for truth instead of against it. I’d love to see Mr. White become a full Christian (Catholic). I see so much good and dignity in the man apart from the anti-Catholic “shenanigans”. We need guys like James White (but in a Catholic capacity).

I’ve read a lot of yours and Church Militants fine posts over time and I am sure you guys (and so many other great Catholic defenders here at Catholic Answers Forums [CAF]) are praying for James White’s conversion (as am I). The other fine Catholics here also do a great job at neutralizing the anti-Catholic shenanigans (there are so many of them here—I have often marveled to my wife as to how there can be so many well prepared Catholics here). “Yall” help guys like me to see the Catholic faith much better. Keep up the great work you guys and stay close to the Church.

Please keep me in your prayers too as I do for all the CAF folks I read and/or interact with.

I’m not familiar with the debates and will have to check them out, but in my opinion, whenever religion or politics are discussed, usually both sides of the debate feel they made the best point and that the other side didn’t ‘win’.

Thanks for sharing the name of the ministries. I do appreciate level-headed discussions and debates, and will have to check it out - it’s such a rare thing to find these days!

I think that many folk on this forum are able to step back from our personal beliefs and objectively gauge the strengths and weaknesses of each presentation. But most folk don’t do that. The guy that is saying what they already believe is viewed as more credible. The protestant does not need to be convinced that White is right - he already believes it. And the Catholic already believes that Madrid is right. When the two clash, few people in the audience will question their beliefs based on what is said on stage (though seeds can be planted).

It’s the same in politics. In a presidential debate, the majority of Republicans say the Republican won, and likewise for Democrats. They both watched the exact same debate, but came away with opposite conclusions which just happen to be the same opinion that they had at the start.

I know in the case of John MacArthur and probably many of the others it comes down to authority. They built a life in which they were the supreme authority on the Bible. They were the sole interpreter. They build radio shows and churches and ministry’s with their picture on the web banner and it feeds them to have people swarm to them. Often too they carry on the family tradition and ministry.

It is therefore a great threat to them to have someone claim they have no authority and in fact the authority lies in the Catholic Church under the true authority of the Bishops and Pope.

They do whatever they can to fight this so they can be their own pope of their own little world.

Sad. 😦

Scott Hahn and Steve Ray were hell-bent (so to speak) on proving the Catholic Church wrong, and look at them now. So, who knows? James White’s sister, Patti, has converted to Catholicism.

Thanks for your kind words. I learned a lot from the dedicated folks here at CAF before me.

:tiphat:

David-

As much as we want to see “our guy” win a debate, we know when he’s getting pummeled by a well-prepared opponent or when he fails to say something that should have been offered, etc. So, it is possible to concede defeat to the opposition. Mitch Pacwa, IMO, is a really smart guy who is not temperamentally suited for the rough-and-tumble of debates. Robert Sungenis, OTOH, is a bull-dog who can hold his own with anyone.

Debates are no way to discern theological truth, but they can be entertaining as heck, though! 👍

Well-stated David. Especially in regards to a single debating point.

But the two-sided analogy isn’t necessarily applicable when looking for the FULLNESS of truth.

In other words if you have 1000 Protestants all in one room with their Bibles attempting to come to the fullness of conclusions on absolute truth, the best you can theoretically possibly do, is have 999 of them all in error somewhere (and we know it is all 1000).

At this point they just surrender to relativism and say: “Well, we all affirm the basics so that’s good enough.” And if you try to pin them down on “the basics” you see the result: “church splits”.

They have to think this way otherwise the cognitive dissonance that follows would drive one out of their faith. And since Catholicism is so often rejected out of hand without a critical intellectual venture (as it was in Protestant Christians within my own family), there is seemingly nowhere for these poor folks to seek absolute truth so they cling to the relativism and (thankfully) believe much anyway, (but sadly) knowing interiorly, this is not the “fullness of truth”.

The Catholics’ whole foundational principles are different. This massive foundational movement is one reason why it is so hard for someone in Protestantism to come into Catholicism (it’s beyond “hard”–it is a great grace). Yet it is relatively easy to Protestants to go “Church-hopping” from one denomination to the next looking for what they FEEL is the best preaching, music, fellowship, or whatever (a large emotional element).

This is NOT consistent with Jesus telling us the Counselor whom He will send, will lead you into all truth.

**JOHN 15:26-27, 16:13 ** 26 But when the Counselor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me; 27 and you also are witnesses, because you have been with me from the beginning. . . . 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

As Gary Michuta has said using a math class analogy, and authority (I’ll paraphrase):

Our Protestant friends have the math book (most of it anyway), but they all disagree to some extent as to what the answers are. They all have to be their own interpreters and can really never solve issues definitively. This is why they must embrace religious relativism and end up in unity only in defining themselves by what they are not (“We are NOT Catholic”).

With the Catholic Church, we too have the math book, we also have the teachings orally. We DO come to our own answers too. But then the teacher comes around in the classroom looking over your work and can (if necessary) tell you if you have the right or wrong answers so you can correct them.

The teacher also has the (God-given and protected) authority to ignore things in us, such as the student who mis-spelled a word when transcribing a math word problem that is inconsequential to the math problem (notice the teacher taught the word correctly, it was the student who merely transcribed it incorrectly. But if the inaccurate transcription is consequential, the teacher corrects that too). The teachers can also allow legitimate diversity in other areas—i.e. the brand of pencil you favor—because they have the authority and charism to KNOW if this is part of the deposit of faith or not.

The Church is such a great gift!

I’m sure it’s along the lines of there being a lot of Catholics listening to the debate and the Gospel (or what they feel the Gospel is) is being shared with the “unsaved.” Despite how it may appear who won or lost they don’t care, their Gospel was shared with Catholics.

God bless

Honestly, having read or listened to a good number of James White’s debates, I’d go as far to say that he actually won a good number of them. Now, this is coming from someone who was a debator in college, so from a debate perspective, he is one of the best N/C debators around. Actually, I enjoy his debates because he’s so good at it.

But the first thing you learn when you’re debating, just because someone wins doesn’t mean they’re right.

I agree. Madrid referred to him as a professional debater. White has destroyed more than one opponent.

Very true.

Amen! It’s funny…it wasn’t until I started debating Faith/Apologetics that I learned to really evaluate politcal candidates objectively. I agree that the majority of the folks I’ve run into on this forum tend to be more objective and will evaluate a position based on fact rather than emotion or affiliation. 🙂
