Because you attack him and talk about him constantly. If you’re so sure of your arguments and believe he is demonstrably false, why not put your money where your mouth is? Here’s your big chance. Your confidence behind your keyboard is being shown to be nothing but a front.

If you guys don’t have the guts to go on his program and make your case - then stop all this nonsense.

You seem to think that debate proves something. James White is a decent speaker. He has the ability to speak in front of people. But he is dishonest in what he says and he can not stay charitable. Many people don’t have the ability to speak in front of people, including myself. If PhilVaz does not want to debate white that does not prove PhilVaz wrong and james white right. It simply says that PhilVaz does not want to debate. PhilVaz does his apologetics in writing. If you can’t read that and compare it with James Whites statements then that is your problem. If you want a debate, Robert Sungenis debated James White several times and crushed him every time.

So everybody should stop posting White&Co. errors unless they call into his radio program? Are White&Co. not free to come on these forums? I have sent White&Co. emails…he doesn’t respond.

I would love an explanation as to why White&Co. refuses to debate Robert Sungenis yet continue to mention him and his works. (I know…I know…Sungenis lost credibility due to the Mr. X scandal…it doesn’t matter that Sungenis apologized for the incedent, but because Sungenis won’t bow down to White&Co and their Church Father Whisperer cohorts in what he believes is their dubious handling of the texts of the Church Fathers, his apology doesn’t count.

Machen << Because you attack him and talk about him constantly. >>

I respond to his written material and have since 1992 or so. The attacks come from others and I can’t resist so I join in those threads. I don’t attack him personally, others have. I don’t have the experience in face to face or formal debates. If I did I would probably do it. But I don’t call in to radio shows, never have, although I’ve listened to talk radio since high school.

But no thanks, I’d rather demolish his arguments this way:

St. Augustine on the Eucharist

St. Augustine on the Papacy

The Church and Infallibility: A Reply to Salmon

Universal Bishop Controversy quote (used by White early on)

St. Jerome on the Papacy (passage B. in this article used by White early on, it is found in his Answers to Catholic Claims)

Sungenis and Martignoni are your guys for oral debates. I couldn’t do better than Sungenis did in his debates with White on Justification and the Papacy (from 2000). I was at the Papacy one in Clearwater, FL and met Sungenis and White on stage. It was fun. 😃

I think it would be great to debate James White live. I would gladly debate him anytime on the evidence of Catholism in the Divine Liturgy. To debate him on Purgatory alone with only being able to reference the Holy Scriptures is not really a good debate. Since we as Catholics hold that Jesus, “the Word” revealed Himself not only in Sacred Scripture , but also in His oral Word, then you would have to use other sources to have suffcient material to build a debate on. However there is plenty of evidence throughout the history of the early Church liturgies to build a powerful case for Catholicism. :bounce:

PhilVaz, I appreciate your honesty about not having the experience to debate Dr. White. But I would think you have to start somewhere. You didn’t say that you do not have the ability to debate nor the skills, so it would still nice if you at least called his radio show.

Dr. White has already said that he is through with Dr. Sungenis, even though Dr. Sungenis posted a half-hearted apology back in 2003 when the Mr. X scandal happened.

rightandreason-give Dr. White a call on his DL program since you are just biting at the bits to debate him. It’s one thing to say something in this forum and another to actually confront him live. Just ask Miki. If you are honest and listen to her closely, her voice cracking and you could that she was very nervous. And to be honest, I would be too! Thank you everyone!

What stuff? Be very very specific. Where have I gone wrong? I’ll give you these two again:

Augustine on the Eucharist
Augustine on the Papacy

Tell me where myself or John Chapman went wrong. I’ll give you a few months. 😃 This is far more material than anything ever covered in White’s oral debates or his writings the past 16 years. It has stood up to cross-examination since Sungenis relied on some of Chapman’s material in their papacy debate.

Go ahead and cross-examine me, here and now. I’m waiting… maybe start a new thread on Augustine or something.

Well James White has not proved it with his misquoting of the church fathers.

Just a sidenote- I’ve been reading this with a high level of interest, as Dr. James White’s ministry was always well-regarded by many in the Evangelical church.

However, reading this post has demonstrated to me two things- one, that the people here have been far more charitable to Dr. White than he has to them. We all know that if someone here faltered for examples, he’d be all over it- yet the people here are actually giving him some slack for his weak arguments, saying he might be tired. You all are alot nicer than I am! Secondly, his arguments are not only weak, but he’s rude. I hate condescendsion, and his emails are positively dripping with it .

You all have treated him with a much higher level of respect than he deserves, a level of respect that he has not given to you. I’m proud of you all! 👍

Ok, back to my seat, to continue watching the action. 🙂

You’re not trying to start a debate. You’re trying to pick a fight. You’re being quite rude.

When I got here I was informed of yet another example of the utter bankruptcy of the RC “on line apologetics” people. (J. White)

I am perplexed. For a man who consistently complains about ad hominem attacks, he seems to use them often.

Because you attack him and talk about him constantly.
On the contrary, his blogs seem to be obsessed with refutation of Roman Catholic doctrine.
If you’re so sure of your arguments and believe he is demonstrably false, why not put your money where your mouth is? Here’s your big chance. Your confidence behind your keyboard is being shown to be nothing but a front.
Face to face debate is too easily prone to egoism.
stop all this nonsense.
A mutual cease-fire would be preferable.

Hello and thanks for the fascinating thread.

I would like to know if there are some good Catholic-Protestant debates available online as mp3s or if there are videotapes or DVDs of them on amazon or somewhere.

I’m also interested in the argument from the ancient liturgies. Where do we find these texts, where can we read the ancient liturgies and how do we know how ancient they are and how good are the historical documents we have?

Thanks

There are some really good debates between Robert Sungenis and James White available on Robert’s website. I believe he has like 4 or 5 available. Enjoy. catholicintl.com/:yup:

I had no idea it was possible to be wrong this many times in this few words.
  1. As you may recall, those of us out there with debate experience (Jimmy White and I come to mind) have no fear whatsoever about calling White. The reason that even we don’t choose to do it very often is that, contrary to your assertions, White almost invariably choose to obfuscate the issues rather than actually dealing with them substantively. In other words, it is a waste of everyone’s time, and even if PhilVaz were an experienced debater, I could see why he wouldn’t bother with White.
  2. Relating to that point, cross-examination can be a useful tool for truthseeking IF it isn’t used as a “debater’s trick.” But when cross-ex is used either to “trap” an opponent in a supposed admission (which usually involves a straw man fallacy) or in alleged inability to answer a question (usually the complex question fallacy), it is simply abusive. At least the last time I called White’s show, that is precisely how White used it, which leads me to believe that, contrary to your suggestion, cross-examination by White would obfuscate the issues rather than clarifying them. Dealing with an obtuse or stubborn opponent in cross-examination is excruciating even for an experienced debater; a rookie has no chance.
  3. On the other hand, repeated observations to White that he is obfuscating and confusing the issues on several subjects have failed to produce any correction, meaning that it is highly unlikely that (1) and (2) will ever improve.
Those are substantial reasons having nothing to do with cowardice for anyone to think twice about wasting time with White. Speaking personally, if I hadn’t wanted to confirm for myself his ignorance on the subject on latria/dulia, I certainly would not have bothered calling him. But there is always the chance that maybe someone is more informed than one thinks he is. Unfortunately in this case, his ignorance on the subject turned out to be literally laughable.

But in the case of PhilVaz, he has not only the reasons cited above but also evidence from written interactions that talking to White would be a complete waste of time, and ironically, it’s on one of the very subjects of this thread!

White’s AOMIN has them all, and Sungenis at www.CatholicIntl.com has all the ones he did with White. The best debates are the following:

White vs. Pacwa on Justification (Jan 1991)
White vs. Sungenis on Justification (May 2000)
White vs. Sungenis on Papacy (Oct 2000)
White vs. Matatics on sola scriptura (1997)

Other good ones:

Bahnsen vs. Matatics on authority/Marian doctrines (KKLA 1992)
White vs. Akin on B.A.M. (1995 available from the Catholic Answers store)
Martin vs. Pacwa marathon (1986-87 from www.JohnAnkerberg.org)

These are the ones you want. Send me a private Email.

White provided several quotes from Augustine here:
aomin.org/index.php?itemid=1470

I cited three of PhilVaz’s articles in response here:
envoymagazine.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1670
including the following article re: Augustine and the Eucharist, also cited above:
bringyou.to/apologetics/num30.htm

White responded:
So, having linked to one embarrassing “response” to me, I was hardly surprised to then find links to Dave “if you dare review my exegesis and prove I have no idea what I’m doing I will say you are mean and never talk to anti-Catholics again!” Armstrong and to Phil Porvaznik, neither of which even begin to address the very issue I raised and which Prejean quotes, that being Augustine’s doctrine regarding the physical body of Jesus. It is quite possible Prejean doesn’t know what I am referring to here, though I have raised the point in past debates.
aomin.org/index.php?itemid=1489

On this point, White is either clueless or dishonest. One of PhilVaz’s quotes from the Ennarations on the Psalms states:
How this (‘And he was carried in his own hands’) should be understood literally of David, we cannot discover; but we can discover how it is meant of Christ. FOR CHRIST WAS CARRIED IN HIS OWN HANDS, WHEN, REFERRING TO HIS OWN BODY, HE SAID: ‘THIS IS MY BODY.’ FOR HE CARRIED THAT BODY IN HIS HANDS.
This quote juxtaposes both Augustine’s belief in the Real Presence and his belief in Christ’s physical body, and he is clearly speaking of a physical act of carrying His own body. I know what White is talking about, but White evidently doesn’t. White’s entire argument assumes that there is only one mode of bodily presence (namely, fleshly presence). Yet here, Augustine clearly indicates a kind of physical, bodily presence distinct from Christ’s fleshly presence, thereby creating a distinction where White asserts that there cannot be one. That’s a direct contradiction of White’s argument, meaning that White is obviously wrong in his interpretation of Augustine (the obvious error being that “bodily” in context of the other quotes clearly refers to “fleshly” as opposed to “spiritual” ).

Now, if it is so easy to respond to PhilVaz’s argument, why did he assert some lame excuse about the quotes not referring to Christ’s fleshly presence, when that isn’t even the issue? What makes you think he would do any better in person than he did in writing with the texts in front of him? And that’s leaving aside what this suggests about White’s competence on Catholic theology, given that he can’t even grasp the basic distinction between substantial presence and fleshly presence that should have been pretty obvious even from the word “transubstantiation.”

So why should PhilVaz waste his time with someone who hasn’t been able to answer his arguments in writing, whose failure to answer his point shows a basic inability to grasp even rudimentary Catholic theology, and who has already used the oral format in an obfuscatory manner? How is the truth served by debating an incompetent?

JPrejean << So why should PhilVaz waste his time with someone who hasn’t been able to answer his arguments in writing, whose failure to answer his point shows a basic inability to grasp even rudimentary Catholic theology, and who has already used the oral format in an obfuscatory manner? >>

Thanks. I can agree with White on this one point: St. Augustine did not believe in the full, explicit, later defined doctrine of transubstantiation that arose out of the 9th and 11th and 12th century controversies on the Eucharist (all documented in Darwell Stone’s volumes). But I can also agree that St. Ignatius of Antioch in the second century did not believe in the full, explicit, later defined doctrine of the Holy Trinity and divine person of Jesus Christ that arose out of the 4th and 5th century controversies on the nature of God. Same idea.

Why is it so hard for White to admit “I do not agree with St. Augustine on the Eucharist.” I don’t get that. As I mentioned in the other theads, White is a baptist for crying out loud. He does not agree with St. Augustine. Just let us have St. Augustine, call it quits, and stop quoting him. 😃

Your relevant passages on Augustine for bodily presence in Eucharist are what you cited. The two most important are:

“How this ‘And he was carried in his own hands’] should be understood literally of David, we cannot discover; but we can discover how it is meant of Christ. FOR CHRIST WAS CARRIED IN HIS OWN HANDS, WHEN, REFERRING TO HIS OWN BODY, HE SAID: ‘THIS IS MY BODY.’ FOR HE CARRIED THAT BODY IN HIS HANDS.” (Psalms 33:1:10)

“…I turn to Christ, because it is He whom I seek here; and I discover how the earth is adored without impiety, how without impiety the footstool of His feet is adored. For He received earth from earth; because flesh is from the earth, and He took flesh from the flesh of Mary. He walked here in the same flesh, AND GAVE US THE SAME FLESH TO BE EATEN UNTO SALVATION. BUT NO ONE EATS THAT FLESH UNLESS FIRST HE ADORES IT; and thus it is discovered how such a footstool of the Lord’s feet is adored; AND NOT ONLY DO WE NOT SIN BY ADORING, WE DO SIN BY NOT ADORING.” (Psalms 98:9)

Also the commentary from reputable Church historians and patristic scholars I have cited is important:

"‘You know,’ he said in another sermon [Serm 9:14], ‘what you are eating and what you are drinking, or rather, WHOM you are EATING and WHOM you are DRINKING.’ Commenting on the Psalmist’s bidding that we should adore the footstool of His feet, he pointed out [Enarr in Ps 98:9] that this must be the earth. But since to adore the earth would be blasphemous, he concluded that the word must mysteriously signify the FLESH which Christ took from the earth and which He gave to us to EAT. Thus it was the EUCHARISTIC BODY WHICH DEMANDED ADORATION.

"Again, he explained [Enarr in Ps 33:1:10] the sentence, ‘He was carried in his hands’ (LXX of 1 Sam 21:13), which in the original describes David’s attempt to allay Achish’s suspicions, as referring to the sacrament:

‘CHRIST WAS CARRIED IN HIS HANDS WHEN HE OFFERED HIS VERY BODY AND SAID “THIS IS MY BODY”’.

“One could multiply texts like these which show Augustine taking for granted the traditional identification of the elements WITH THE SACRED BODY AND BLOOD. There can be NO DOUBT that he shared the REALISM held by almost ALL his contemporaries and predecessors.” (Kelly, Early Christian Doctrines, 446-447)

Now Kelly goes on to suggest St. Augustine was not as explicit as others on the nature of the “real presence” and “change” as were St. Ambrose in the west, and several eastern Fathers who come closest to the explicit doctrine of transubstantiation. But please let’s not ignore everything else St. Augustine believed.
