Dr. Mehmet Oz spoke with actress Valerie Harper about her brain cancer and with Dr. Kelly Turner about radical cancer remission on the Nov. 25 episode of the Dr. Oz Show. Harper was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in January 2013 and was given three months to live. Almost two years later, Valerie is still alive and well.

Harper said she’s not sure why she’s still alive, but has been treating her leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, a rare incurable brain cancer, with acupuncture, herbal teas and exercising daily with Tony Cacciotti, her husband of 27 years. In 2013, Valerie underwent chemotherapy for her brain cancer.

Considering the original prognosis for her, this is an amazing recovery.

So what helped her overturn the tide mainly from reading the article?

I would be looking at possibly the acupuncture. I did not see the show. I think there is a blog on the internet that gives a full detailed-summary for each of his shows.

She is listed on wikipedia’s list as a “former Roman Catholic” (see list link at bottom of page, the article likewise says she “quit” at a young age). I would not have known this.

… She is of French, English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh ancestry.

I really figured she was probably like the character she portrayed. Wrong.

Her husband since 1987 is Tony Cacciotti, seemingly an Italian name I would think and quite possibly or even likely with a Catholic background too.

These events, put things in perspective. Perhaps I will hunt down this website I have seen that summarizes Doctor Oz’s shows in details. If they have anything more, I may post more info.

Of course, the OP mentions she underwent Chemotherapy. So I would think that is probably a main cause of her recovery but I can’t say that with certainty. Anyway, it may even be more complex than this. We will see. She may well be making the talk show circuit to talk about this.

If anything, her prognosis was probably in error. One does not cure cancer with herbal teas, acupuncture and exercise. And just because she is in remission right now doesn’t mean that tomorrow morning it won’t reverse with breakneck speed. Good luck to her.

The wikipedia article on Mary Tyler Moore likewise is interesting, she went to Catholic Elementary and Middle School apparently in New York and some Catholic High School in Southern California for those interested. I think she was in a movie with Elvis where she was a Nun as well.

Cancer and other inflammatory conditions like MS can go into remission. Sadly, they can return and make a person feel worse than before.

You are absolutely correct. I would urge those interested to read up on her ailment, she was previously suffering and in fact, that cancer may have spread a bit to her brain which thank God, has gone into remission and she seems to be doing some charitable works now, discussing this.
