You just discover that site? 🙂 I’ve been on it for several years. 😉
My favorites are Richard Diamond (the original ‘singing detective’) and Pat Novak for Hire (Jack Webb did this as well, preceeded Dragnet by a couple of years). Novak is PI show that uses the “hard boiled” style of narration in a way that it’s obviously meant to be tongue in cheek.
There’s a lot of great sci fi on as well. X Minus One, Dimension X.

Personally I always loved Orson Welles as The Shadow… my favorite Radio show.

I love these on XM radio, didn’t saline they’re online. Free, I hope.

Sweet! That may be the website I used to listen to Gunsmoke with William Conrad on.

Public Domain? I believe they are.
In general? yes, AFAIK. Apparently, radio broadcasts did not qualify for copyright protection before 1972 (honestly, as off-air recording either didn’t exist or was so prohibitively expensive to the common listener till then, nobody thought copyright protection was necessary). However, scripts could be copyrighted, and that would make a case for the recording to be under copyright. This happened infrequently, though, as, again, most producers didn’t want to go through the hassle or expense to formally copyright-protect something that they thought would only be heard once or a handful of times firmly under their control. (NB: This was before the current law which claims that a work is automatically under copyright at the time of its creation, thereby eliminating the need for formal copyright registration.)

One show where the producers did go that extra mile, however, was The Shadow, with Street & Smith securing copyright protection for the scripts, thereby placing the broadcast recordings under de facto copyright. If you listen closely to the endings of some episodes, they explicitly mention that the show is copyrighted. The Shadow’s rights are now controlled by Conde Nast Publications, who renewed the rights in 1979.
