What are your thoughts on this game?

I’m not too well versed in the lore of the game, but I do think there are parallels between the inquisitions related to Catholicism, and this game. I think you’re investigating/dealing with issues related to your character in the game, and can choose to do a few things to prisoners (like kill, keep, set free, etc).

There’s a group that’s probably a representation of the Church call the Chantry (sp?), but it’s oppressive of mages apparently.

As for as morality in the game, I’m a bit turned off on the ability to have sex scenes (let alone a gay/bi romance option), but I believe those are just optional things to do.

Thoughts? I’ve heard the game is addicting.

As someone who is struggling with Videogame addiction, believe me when I say just give up all the videogames. They often have messages counter to the faith and playing them produces no fruit. Honestly the same can be said about most television.

Statements like yours give me more cause to dump faith everyday than even the most decadent video games.

Because really, your lactose intolerance doesn’t give you a special card that lets you tell everyone to avoid drinking milk.

Does playing videogames in any way further your relationship with god? Are there more constructive things you could be doing with your time?

Honestly I have to admit that I am slightly puritanical in dealings with culture but I believe that it is honestly a much better alternative to devote more time to god than to immerse yourself if the man made constructs that only serve to divert us from our faith.

For example, I find American football to be a means of unhealthy vicarious fulfillment. The point where you actually like watching football more than going to mass is one example of idolatry.

Our god is what we value most in life and involvement in the world just allows us to construct a god in the same way the Israelites constructed the golden calf.

My goal in life is to actively serve others, eliminate unneeded indulgences from my life, and study catholic theology.

As someone who plays videogames myself, I can say that it’s all up to the individual. Me myself? I’m not fond of the Dragon Age series, or most Bioware games because it focuses on romance instead of the story itself. (I mean seriously, a glowing mark on the hand is supposed to stop the rift from growing bigger?) I think the series in and of itself requires MUCH more fleshing out for it to be considered a proper RPG. When it comes to videogames/other forms of media…I say to each their own. After all, some games have stories that can rival that of a book if done correctly. :twocents:

If your mentality is any indication of someone with a close relationship with the Almighty, I’d rather have a harem.
Are there more constructive things you could be doing with your time?
Case in point.

Slight? Sorry, you underestimate just how off-base your generalizations are. Not to mention how off-putting your approach is. Not everyone is called to the seminary or to the monastic life. Don’t wait for a cynical Cafeterian like me to tell you that much.

Yeah. Sure. Just so you know, rhetoric like that is not going to get people to care if it gets you stuffed in your own locker or your head down a toilet.
Our god is what we value most in life and involvement in the world just allows us to construct a god in the same way the Israelites constructed the golden calf.
Nice. You presume I worship my video games. Yeah, I am definitely considering a harem now.
My goal in life is to actively serve others, eliminate unneeded indulgences from my life, and study catholic theology.
Yeah. You do that. Although, it makes me wonder why then are you wasting your time telling us gamers what our goals in lives should be. Shouldn’t you be running along to the seminary instead of goading internet strangers with your off-putting generalizations?

***These statements make me sad. The fact that one would even joke about such a sinful behavior is anti-Christian.

Case in point.

***Think of the church in its nascent stages more than a thousand years ago. God was the life of early Christians. The world was much better off before all the pointless distractions that take us away from god. I define “better” as general piety and salvation of souls as that is truly the most important matter in life and beyond.

Yeah. Sure. Just so you know, rhetoric like that is not going to get people to care if it gets you stuffed in your own locker or your head down a toilet.

Piety met with adversity is nothing new. I welcome it.

Nice. You presume I worship my video games. Yeah, I am definitely considering a harem now.

***Anything one finds more central to their life than the True God is a constructed God. ***

Yeah. You do that. Although, it makes me wonder why then are you wasting your time telling us gamers what our goals in lives should be. Shouldn’t you be running along to the seminary instead of goading with your off-putting generalizations?

What you call generalizations promote a worldview that brings one closer to god, which is the most important thing.

These statements make me sad. The fact that one would even joke about such a sinful behavior is anti-Christian.
Right, and you obviously take no responsibility for nurturing my resentment.

Even though you are.
Think of the church in its nascent stages more than a thousand years ago.
You mean when there was no indoor plumbing, public sanitation was suspect, and life expectancy was lower?

Rather hypocritical of you since you’re typing all this on the internet. Like I said, why are you wasting time here? It’s very hypocritical of you to present this rose-tinted illusion of the Christian past when you’re making use of a supposed distraction that ‘destroyed it’.

It says a lot that you want to shame gamers like me and not yourself for not even practicing what you preach.
Piety met with adversity is nothing new. I welcome it.
Oh so you measure success by the amount of flak you get for what you say. How telling.
Anything one finds more central to their life than the True God is a constructed God.
If you’re any indication of what a person with the ‘True God’ at the center of their life is like, I’d rather make myself a god. I for one am not much of a jerk in comparison.
What you call generalizations promote a worldview that brings one closer to god, which is the most important thing.
Ah yes, making sweeping antagonistic remarks about gamers brings you closer to God. I’m going to log that away for future lulz.

To think people wonder why I have such a ‘distorted view’ of the faith. Thanks for being solid proof of why I don’t take it so seriously anymore. 👍

***Utilizing a tool that is available to you for a constructive purpose is not hypocritical.
Your arguments consist primarily of Ad Hominems. I am not trying to shame anyone. I am presenting my views and you are presenting yours. It is rather you who are trying to shame me for my views due to your haphazard flinging of insults. The remarks about indoor plumbing, public sanitation, and life expectancy are irrelevant if the faithful are saved. ***

Oh so you measure success by the amount of flak you get for what you say. How telling.

Once again, you are putting words in my mouth. I measure success by spiritual growth and abandonment of the frivolous irrelevancies of the world. Being attacked for holding that view is something I welcome if I am staying true to god.

If you’re any indication of what a person with the ‘True God’ at the center of their life is like, I’d rather make myself a god. I for one am not much of a jerk in comparison.

***Is one a jerk simply for having different views. I simply stated my opinion. I concede am honestly not a good indication because I am still growing in my relationship with god and I do not love him enough. ***

Ah yes, making sweeping antagonistic remarks about gamers brings you closer to God. I’m going to log that away for future lulz.

If you read my remarks carefully, they aren’t directed primarily at gamers. What I am saying can be applied to many different scenarios. I never stated that you care about games more than god. I cannot make that judgment because I know nearly nothing about you. What I am saying is that gaming is one of the many things that takes us away from god. I do not believe that gamers are any worse than the rest of us.

To think people wonder why I have such a ‘distorted view’ of the faith. Thanks for being solid proof of why I don’t take it so seriously anymore. 👍

I believe I this argument is greater proof of the corrupting capabilities of modernism.

What would Saint Augustine, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint Ignatius Loyola, or even St. Francis of Assisi say about a game such as Magic: The Gathering:

I think they would be disgusted by explicit references to pagan and sinful behavior.

As someone who played Yu-Gi-Oh intensely for years, I know the nature of these games.

Those men are who we should base our lives upon.

Utilizing a tool that is available to you for a constructive purpose is not hypocritical.
No, scorning them as a distraction is. I ask again: Why are you still here? Shouldn’t you be off praying the Rosary instead of bullying gamers with your unwanted opinions?
The remarks about indoor plumbing, public sanitation, and life expectancy are irrelevant if the faithful are saved.
LOL! An ad hom is defined by its irrelevance to the topic. Since you’re so bent on discussing just how wonderful it is to have no worldly distraction, you should log off, never visit CAF again, and stop wasting your time lambasting other people’s hobbies.

You want to revisit a Christian era where so-called ‘distractions’ were never invented. I ask you again, why then are you wasting time here? You think you’re being constructive preaching to me? HAHAHAHAH! Please, just go back to your prayers. You’re not convincing anyone here. I doubt God would be pleased if His little follower though that the best way to serve Him was to insult fellow human beings through their hobbies.

This thread was about a particular video game series, not about your personal views on why all video games are a waste of time. If anyone should be dictating logical fallacies here, it should be me.

You came here with an irrelevant sweep against the gaming hobby and all hobbies in general. Don’t tell me about ad homs when your entire presence lives up to the definition.
Once again, you are putting words in my mouth. I measure success by spiritual growth and abandonment of the frivolous irrelevancies of the world. Being attacked for holding that view is something I welcome if I am staying true to god.
Yep. You think you’re being true to God because that’s what you think you’re being attacked for. Not the fact that you’re being obnoxious. Words in your mouth? Hardly, because that’s really what you’re saying. Everything’s free game for you to disrespect just long as I’m not crossing myself and reciting 150 Hail Marys.
I never stated that you care about games more than god.
Thou shalt not bear false witness remember?
Our god is what we value most in life and involvement in the world just allows us to construct a god in the same way the Israelites constructed the golden calf.

:rotfl:

You claim to be innocent of judging yet you just judged swaths of entire people, including gamers, including me. You are a hypocrite and have no right to talk of having God at the center of one’s life. Because if you’re any indication, I’d rather not!
Is one a jerk simply for having different views. I simply stated my opinion. I concede am honestly not a good indication because I am still growing in my relationship with god and I do not love him enough.
One can hold a different view without necessarily exhibiting the condescending, spiritually arrogant tone that’s clearly reeking from your posts. Shall I demonstrate?

Exhibit A:
As someone who is struggling with Videogame addiction, believe me when I say just give up all the videogames. They often have messages counter to the faith and playing them produces no fruit. Honestly the same can be said about most television.
Exhibit B:
What would Saint Augustine, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint Ignatius Loyola, or even St. Francis of Assisi say about a game such as Magic: The Gathering:

I think they would be disgusted by explicit references to pagan and sinful behavior.
These aren’t different views. These are sweeping, pompous, and presumptuous remarks about other people’s hobbies. You make no attempt to not only hide your distaste but even insist that everyone shares it!

I’ve been on these forums long enough to know that people who think like you, who believe that the only life worth living is to eat and drink a religion, are the very people responsible for turning people off from whatever God you want us to worship. Your so-called enemy ‘modernism’ isn’t winning because of decadent faithful. It’s losing because people like you make for the worst examples for it.

Heck, you even admit at your own puritanical leanings and you expect me to believe you when you say you’re only ‘sharing a different view’? You’re not sharing a different view. You’re shoving it and setting yourself up holier than the Pope by making a mandate to everyone to start living like its 1014.

Indignation is the soul’s defense against the wound of doubt about its own; it reorders the cosmos to support the justice of its cause. It justifies putting Socrates to death. Recognizing indignation for what it is constitutes knowledge of the soul, and is thus an experience more philosophic than the study of mathematics.

—Allan Bloom in Music (from The Closing of the American Mind)

Indignation is also the name of the seriesTales of of J-RPGs.

But enough about that, can we all get back to Dragon Age now? 🤓 (I barely managed to play bits of Dragon Age 2 before my PC died but would’ve really preferred the first game all the same.)

Am I guilty of reordering the cosmos? I honestly don’t believe so. Then again the exact morality in this area of discussion is commonly viewed to be nebulous.

This wasn’t directed at you because I don’t think anything you have said has been indignant.

What a tedious thread, made so by unusually assertive remarks from Wanderer. It’s notable how the most violent persons in life are engrossed in all kinds of worldly desires, such as electronic entertainment. Perhaps the theory that video games help destroy the soul is plausible. :hmmm:

The topic alone sowed the fruits of strife among the Christian community here, and we all know where the fruits of strife come from.

Oh so you addressed it to me?

Because I don’t see how your quote even says anything on the topic of Dragon Age or my low tolerance for stupid. 🤷

Oh so I’m a ravaged souls because my words hurt so much they feel like punches to your face? That’s good! I’ll keep punching because it seems to me ‘violence’ has been the most straightforward way to address careless remarks in the name of religion.

Because if people who say things like you are what having a soul is all about, I’ll gladly be a soulless lich.

Funny cuz Dragon Age really loves to tackle the subject of religion being used to justify strife. Kinda like how you’re defending comments that make sweeping judgments about video games and modern culture in general because hey, so long as it’s for the Glory of the most high, you’re free to disrespect. 👍

So keep it at guys, you’re just giving me a bigger axe to grind with this religion than I already have. One would think you all would know the best evangelizers don’t go out of their way to insult and disrespect their audience because of their hobbies.

FJBSJ simply shared his opinion and you answer him as if he’s your nemesis. I had to defend him because the answer he received is unjustified. :onpatrol:

Your words weren’t wrong, but they were presented in the wrong way.

Right and if I said all Christians are just knock-off Mithraists and called it my opinion, most people on these boards would still be ready to fight. Unbelievable. Talk about a large plank in the collective’s eye. You’re free to arrogantly put down other people’s hobbies and interests just long as it’s in the name of religion?

Yeah, that’s fair.
