Generally, we don’t see R rated films unless we think they have merit, such as The Passion, which certainly did. I consider it a piece of high art, not just another film, and Mel Gibson deserves the thanks of every Christian in the world for having the courage and desire to make it for us.
As to good films, I loved the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which stayed pretty true to the tone and themes that Tolkien meant the story to have. Peter Jackson decided from the get-go that he and his writing team weren’t going to interject their personal ideas or political biases into Tolkien’s story. And thanks be, they stuck to that wise decision and produced a masterpiece that children and adults can enjoy for generations to come.
Now, I am waiting eagerly for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, also being done in New Zealand by non-Hollywood type people. I am hoping it too will be as faithful as possible to C. S. Lewis’ vision and intention. If it is, it too will be a masterpiece for all to enjoy for as long as film exists.
