Of all the great Christian minds that have ever lived, who would you love to see debate? Of all the Early Church Fathers and Doctors of the Church, and even heretics, who would you have square off in the arena of debate?
  1. I would love to have seen Origen and Tertullian go at it. Both were genius.
  2. I would have loved to seen St. Jerome and St. Augustine go all out. St. Augustine tried to get Jerome to have a debate but Jerome took so much offense to it that it never turned into the heathy dedate that it could have been. What a pair!
  3. St. John Cassian verses St. Thomas Aquinas. St. Thomas kept St. Cassians writings on his desk at all times and read it every day. I am utterly amazed at boths mens genius!
  4. John Henry Cardinal Newman verses Martin Luther. I would love to just see Luther get taken to school by Newman!

I would have liked to see St. Thomas More in court take on anyone or better yet have him debate Luther or the other heretics in history. Or have him up against I think his name was Michael, the patriarch who separated from the West in 1054.

G.K. Chesterton vs. anyone.

What of or about St. Thomas More should I read? I hear him mentioned a lot lately and I’ve never been properly introduced to this saint.

Hello copland, the wannabe

this could be a great thread… I hope the posters suggest a topic with each pair of “combatants”

How about
St Jerome and his command of both Latin and Hebrew
pitted against
James White and his experience with Greek?

The topic … Who do we worship, Who do we not Worship.
smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/18/18_1_30v.gif

or JPII
pitted against
any baptist

Topic: The importance of the Blessed Mother in the plan of Salvation

On that account I wish I could see St. Thomas More vs. King Henry VIII. Just not get his head cut off for it though.

Myself and any of the following:

Scott Hahn, Jimmy Akin, Karl Keating and any of the other wonderfully informed and articulate apologists associated with EWTN and or Catholic Answers.

Not that I could hold a candle to these men, I can’t. But that is just the point, it’s just that sometimes when my faith is failing me I’d love to have any of these mens’ undivided attention to bounce my thoughts and doubts off of.

Pax vobiscum!

This is a fun idea for a thread! I would love to see the following:

St. Augustine vs. James White on the subject of “Was Augustine a Calvinist and did Augustine believe in the Eucharist?”

As someone else said, G.K. Chesterton vs. anyone.

C.S. Lewis vs. Ayn Rand (no, I did not get my name from her!)

St. Paul and St. James vs. Martin Luther and John Calvin on sola fide and predestination

St. John vs. Dave Hunt on the subject of “What/who is the Whore of Babylon?”

Any pre-St. Jerome Christian vs. any Protestant on sola scriptura

In Christ,
Rand

Chesterton vs. anyone nice.
Anyone mean, they have to take on Hilaire “I am now going to sneer” Belloc. Seriously, that man did not take prisoners.
Oh, and Steven Hawking vs. Mortimer J. Adler, who took the Faith shortly before his death. Adler, as you may know, corrected the major philosophical problem with quantum physics in a footnote.
Mr. Hawking, philosophically illiterate philandering adulterous jerk that he is, would be out of his depth, and how.

Pax vobiscum!

C.S. Lewis vs. Ayn Rand (no, I did not get my name from her!)

St. Paul and St. James vs. Martin Luther and John Calvin on sola fide and predestination
C.S. Lewis v. Ann Rand…now THAT would be a debate!

St. Paul and St. James v. St. Luther and St. Calvin…but you can only have a debate if there is a disagreement in postion!?! 😉

In case no one told you, Luther was a heretic, abd Cavin should have stayed a partner of Hobbs.

Pax tecum!

I am pretty sure St. Paul would object to Luther adding the word “alone” to the third chapter of his Epistle to the Romans. I also think St. James would have something to say about Luther claiming he didn’t write his Epistle.

In Christ,
Rand

Hmm, St. Paul vs. Calvin, or any modern-day fundamentalists (“no Paul, your wrong- you actually meant this…”).

St. Thomas Aquinas vs.the heretic Arius would also be good 😃

I would love to see St. Jerome debate any protestant theologian. His polemics are great and he would destroy every one of them.
