Dreams, dreams...what's the teaching on dreams?

I did a Google search for spider pics (!) because I need to get an idea how to draw them for a Halloween poster I’m illustrating in one of my college classes. I came across this weird pic and clicked on it to see what the heck was going on and it brought me to this website about dreams! As I read, I was struck by the meaning of the spider in dreams and I realized that I keep having dreams about spiders - even though I rather hate them - and reading about their symbol and meaning, I came to realize that that’s what I have been struggling with or something, as if the dream of the spider is trying to tell me something?

Not to mention I keep find spiders in my apartment and I end up freaking out and killing them. LOL!

What does the CC teach about dreams and what they mean? Or I should say, what does the CC say and warn us about website’s saying? 😛

Without reading up on the subject of dreams I believe dreams could be used as a means for God to tell you something. An example from the Bible is St. Joseph and his dream. I also believe not every dream means something and we shouldn’t try to make something out of them. I too would be interest in exactly what the Church’s position is on dreams. I’ve sure had many that makes me wonder if they mean anything.
 
I know if I eat a huge burrito or something before I do to sleep, I have some pretty wacky dreams. Maybe it is just because of my personal experience that I induce this to myself but I do try to keep away from huge meals before going to sleep. It makes for a more peaceful night.

The only teaching I am aware of is that you can’t sin while dreaming. I don’t know of trying to extract meanings from dreams though. I have a pretty varied dream schedule which ranges from me flying around to being in the Navy. So I try to not try and get meaning from my dreams.

I had a dream about flying spiders which I thought would be good for a horror movie.
 
I had a dream once in which there was a spider who also happened to be a Jedi. I’m not sure if this particular dream means anything or not… 🙂
 
It depends if this was after you saw General Grievious or not. 🙂

I asked this of the apologists a while back but didn’t get an answer. This is the third time I’ve seen it come up lately. I’ll read the encyclopedic article (but I’m often told where that encyclopedia is wrong).

ETA: looked over the article. It seems to be more of a history of dream interpretation, and ends with the oh-so-helpful idea of:

It is possible for God to communicate through dreams, but most people do not place much store in it today (despite strong historical evidence in favor of it). Sometimes dreams can be divine, and sometimes they can be prophetic, and sometimes they are just man’s imagination. So there isn’t much use in interpreting them.

My gosh! It seems like demons and the devil are ALWAYS CONSTANTLY involved in doing this, that, etc.

Are you saying that EVERY SINGLE dream we have is from either a demon or God? Isn’t there a dream where none are involved? Just our pyschotic state?
 
demons play a bigger role in our lives than anyone realizes… but that does not mean everything is either from Demon, or from God. if a dream is telling you to do something, or predicting great things, i wouldnt trust it… if it’s just your average dream about anything and everything, then its probably just a dream. If God really wants his point across, He;ll come back… He will understand your mistrust, and He is patient.

But can you sin in a dream if you know you are dreaming (lucid dreams)?

no he is quoting another spiritual writer who has one opinion. There are 3 possibilities, not 2, in considering the origin of dreams
a) divine b) demonic c)large burrito or pepperoni pizza right before bed. c) is by far the most frequent cause of troubling dreams

First off dreams occur in REM (rapid eye movement) sleep or stage 4 sleep according to the new classification by the American sleep association. The brain activity of stage 4 or REM sleep is identical to the awake mind except that the body and voluntary movement control is inhibited by a part of the brain.

We also know that medication can induce nightmares or strange dreams or suppress them.

Sleep specialists readily admit they have no ideas what dreams are.

There have been a variety of psychological theories about dreams, but none of them can explain why some dreams reveal future things or seem to offer us insight into present things, or warnings of things that need to be changed in our lives.

In my perspective, Dreams were just one way that man communicated with God. When man fell by eating from the tree of good and evil, evil was allowed to enter man’s DNA and his dream life. Thus, our communication with God via dreams likely became very unreliable and in a way, mirrored the spiritual combat that takes place in our awake spiritual lives. How to interpret a dream requires discernment, skill, experiences, grace, prayer, and a few other things likely.

One day after Jesus comes back, I believe that man and nature will be restored from the effects of the fall, and dreams maybe something that likewise becomes healed and well.

Sadly, man is not the only created being to fall. There are fallen angels as well. We know that angels can communicate with the mind of man in a dream, as the angel that gave St. Joseph his warning to flee to Egypt and to marry the Blessed Mother.

It then makes sense that if 1/3 of the angels fell, some of them retained this power, and now use it for evil.

That all being said, God can still give a dream and there are people who claim to be able to interpret them.

One such man is John Paul Jackson, someone I have never met, but have been studying his materials of late.

Jesus spoke to early christians in parables and metaphors. He still does in dreams.

Apparently, according to John Paul, spiders represent the occult or occultic forces or demons of the occult.
