I hope this isn’t a repeat…but I was wondering

I know we are held accountable for our thoughts and actions etc…what about dreams?

I tried for about a week during lent to not think angry thoughts even if people really upset me. I guess I repressed them so much they came out as violent dreams. In my dream I would attack someone in a very violent manner and feel very angry.

Is this a sin? even if you can’t control it?

I’m a psychologist so I’m under the impression that a lot of dreams are uncontrollable due to the whole unconscious nature.

All Catholic theologians (eg. St. Thomas Aquinas) agree that dreams are not sinful because they are beyond our control. Some talk about bringing on dreams before falling asleep. But I wonder if this is possible.
Whether dreams are symbols with some meaning is an interesting but open question.

By definition, a sin is a choice against God. If we do not choose something, we do not sin. Thus, things like dreams or involuntary thoughts cannot be sinful.
