Hey everyone,

Ok this is my situation…I go through stages in my life where I am real close to Jesus then real distant from Jesus (I know it sucks that I cant consisently stay close with Jesus). As of right now I feel that I am strengthening my relationship with Jesus. I attend church, confession, bible study, and so forth. Everytime I feel i am getting close with Jesus I experience some wierd dreams. I have been very promiscious in the past (i have now take a vow abstinence). My dreams are very sexual like there almost real and I have them on a daily basis. Also lately I have a few dreams with the devil in them(which freak me out) and make it difficult to sleep. Should I be concerned with these dreams or could i be just subconsciously thinking of the these things
These dreams come and go. Always when I am trying to strengthen my relationship with Jesus…

thanks in advance

Hi…
I know what you mean about there being stages in life…I do (did?) the exact same thing. There was a time when I resented going to church and if I even had a cold, used that to avoid going. Then I had a time when I was dead set on becoming a nun. Now I swing back and forth, but am trying to even it out :o We’re only human, so it’s difficult for us to maintain a level without fluctuating, though we all ought to try our best to be “perfect”.

I can attest to the dream parts too. It seems like the closer you try to be to Jesus and God, and the more you try to be open to the Holy Spirit, the more the devil tries to convince you that “you’ll never be perfect, so might as well not try” because obviously he doesn’t want you to turn to God. One of his best tools is convincing us that we are such sinners we can never be fully forgiven, which is not true! (I think C.S. Lewis wrote a book of fictional correspondence between two demons…saying the same thing)

I think he’s trying to make you regret your vow of abstinence and “miss” your former life, and just plain making it harder on you. But don’t worry, he’ll give up eventually. He did for me, though he tries occasionally, testing my barriers. You, of course, are still building up the wall of faith, but after time, the wall will be higher and the door of sin opportunity will be more guarded, and the less able the devil will penetrate your defenses.

Do you have some sort of “free will” in your dreams? Most of the times, the dreams just play out in my head. But, occasionally, I’ll either recognize the threat or realize I’m dreaming. When that happens, I pray and/or sing in my dreams, and then I wake up feeling shaken, but peaceful at the same time 🙂 It takes practice, so don’t fret, but you will eventually realize in your dream state you still have the tool of prayer and asking God, the angels and saints for help.

Congratulations on your success so far, and I wish you good luck in your future dreams 🙂

Hello Mr. Pac,
Code:
As for your vow of abstinence I commend you. I assume that when you are used to one thing it is hard to just get up and change, especially when talking about a subject as tempting as sex.

I feel as though subconscously (acknowledging something and not knowing you are acknowledging it) you are obviously still almost dependant on your previous lifestyle. Just another weakness us as human beings have to fight. I wouldn't be too concerned with those dreams as the more time passes the less you will think about it, and in turn stop dreaming about it. Remember though, in everything that you do you must always remain strong and keep your faith in God very strong, without Him, well, I couldn't even imagine.

As for your dreams of the devil, though I know sounds frightening and I would imagine must be for you, God has assured us that He is the only one who can do any type of damage to us for He is the only one who decides where our souls go. Any tribulations that the devil throws at us, and trust me he will, should only strengthin us spiritually, why would he want to attack someone who isn't close with God? Just let the devil know that fear isn't a feeling that a follower of Christ feels, and his attacks will be easier and easier to fight off. I know it's hard, but the more you fight it, the less you will have to, because he will become less persistent.

Keep God alive at all times, if He brings you to it, He will bring you through it.

Not to derail the thread lol, but the name of the book is “The Screwtape Letters”. HIGHLY recommended! 👍

I know exactly how you feel. I’ve had some very horrible dreams, and I’ve had what scientists would call ‘night terrors’ in the past. I’ve experienced sleep paralysis and visions upon waking in the middle of the night. These seem to come about when I’m more spiritual than usual, for example if I have been praying a lot.

I’m wary of saying that these experiences are supernatural and I am more inclined to believe that science can provide an answer but they’re still horrible.

Anyway, I don’t let them bother me and I just pray when they happen as the previous poster suggested. I have found this to be very effective, especially when you pray directly to Jesus. The St Michael Prayer also works.

I’ve also hung my Rosary up on the wall and this seems to have helped. All of this may be psychological, but at least I don’t have the nightmares anymore.

Pac, all the above advice is good!

I struggled with very similar stuff in my faith journey. I had some really hard hitting and disturbing dreams. When I finally humbled myself and admitted that I was indeed capable of doing all the things that i had done in those dreams, I learned how messed up I really was and how i needed to start changing a few things in my life.

I learned that in spite of my weaknesses, God still loved me, Jesus still died for me. The more I accept myself and what I’m really capable of, the more I realise how much I am loved. I used to think accepting yourself meant “I’m happy with the way I am”, when it really means “I accept that who and what I really am (a mess) and I need God”

Recently I went on a retreat where I made a General confession where I confessed everything I could remember from my whole life. Don’t get me wrong I believe that I was forgiven when I confessed this stuff years ago, but I now realise that confession doesn’t just forgive your sins, it heals the very place you’ve been hurt. the more precise you can be, the more precise the healing is. When it came to the sexual stuff I didn’t just say the name of the sin, as I would have in the past, but I told the priest al the sins I commited, the name of each partner, for how long our relationship lasted, what we done (and any other details that I could think of), all the things I had watched, all the things i had done, and even all the horible things that I thought about doing. I felt amazingly close to God afterwards. May God bless

Don’t overlook asking St. Joseph for help! In the Litany of St. Joseph, he is called Terror of Demons. He is also the Protector of Chastity and his help is particularly powerful in your situation!
