Dress code for ordination?

Hello,

A friend of mine suddenly gave me two tickets to a nearby quadruple ordination. I was wondering what a good way to dress was. For Mass, I usually wear a polo shirt (or golf shirt-whatever they’re called) and tan pants with black shoes.

I’m not getting ordained, and I’m not related to anyone who is-I’m just going.

And I’m sure they’ll be people there in t-shirts and flip-flops, but I’m just getting ideas.
 
Personally, I’d go in a suit.

However, if it’s really hot, then smart-casual is probably the way to go.

Suit and tie. Dress like you’d dress for a wedding.

Ordinations are great. Make sure to get First Blessing from the new priests.

Coat and tie. Doesn’t have to be a suit. After 25 years of singing for ordinations, I can tell you that you are not going to see folks in tee shirts and flip-flops - particularly if tickets are being issued.

This is a red letter day for those four young men - would you go to a wedding in a tee shirt and flip-flops?
 
If you were my husband, a tie hater from way back, I would strongly urge you to put on your navy blue blazer or sport coat with your tan dockers and black shoes; in fact, if you did not, I would throw one of my few, but effective, tantrums;) . If you feel you can stand hanging apeice offabricaorund your neck, wear the blazer or sport coat with an oxford cloth shirt and a nice, conservative tie.
 
Suit and tie – out of respect for God, the bishop(s), the ordinandi, their proud parents, and your fellow worshippers.

Since tickets were issued, it’s likely nobody will be in shorts and flip flops will be there.

Anyway, four new priests sounds exciting. Make sure to report back on how it went! 🙂 👍

I’d toss on a long sleeved dress shirt instead of the polo, at least. Maybe a tie and jacket, too, if you want to be a bit more formal. If you’re just an average attendee and not some sort of guest of honor, I don’t think that a suit is absolutely necessary, but you ought to at least be a little “dressy” as it is a “special occasion.”

I agree that this isn’t your average parish Sunday Mass, so you likely won’t see much in the way of T-shirts, flip flops, and shorts. So learn towards dressing it up rather than down to fit in comfortably. It IS a big event, after all.

How badly other people dress should never be a factor on what is proper.

You should wear a suit and tie, or sport jacket and tie with your khakis.
 
Dress like it was your sister’s wedding, and you’re going to be sitting next to your mom. That will tell you whether what you intend to wear is formal enough in your area, no matter how hot it is.

PS I love the embroidered dress shirts the Phillipino men wear to Mass, for special occasions. Very dressy, very cool.

Well, as long as we’re talking fashion, is the ordination before or after Memorial Day?

White and all, you know.
 
I’ve been to several ordinations and I’ve never seen anyone dress in jeans and t-shirts. The best advice was from the person who said dress like it is your sister’s wedding. An ordination, like a wedding, is a formal event and a suit and tie would definitely be the norm.
 
Is this an ordination for priests or for deacons? It’s been my experience that ordinations of deacons are a bit less formal than those for priests.

I’d agree that wedding attire is probably the best way to dress.

That usually means at least a dress shirt and nice pants. Tie and jacket might be called for, depending on where you live, the time of the day, the ‘culture’ of your diocese, etc.

This is just my personal opinion, but dark pants, no tie, and either a very dark shirt or a white shirt can look dressier than tan pants and a jacket of a different color.

:rotfl: DH has several pairs of shoes, including cordovan. The OP sholdn’t have to buy shoes to wear once. And he could always wear his grey dockers.
 
I agree with the a previous poster, don’t forget the first blessing.

We are going to an ordination at the end of this month, hubby will be in nice slacks and shirt, he does not own a coat or a tie:D

I wore a suit and tie. the ordination was absoultely beautiful.

As an aside, I want to thank the angel priest that heard my confession off in one of the corners when I got there. I don’t know who he was, but he made my day. I just saw him talking with another priest and went up to him and asked if he could hear my confession-and he was very, extremely nice and comforting. Like I said, it made my day like you wouldn’t believe.

I could literally *feel *a tingle go thru my body immediately after he absolved me-sort of how it feels when your foot falls asleep.
