So Hubby and I are getting ready for Convalidation and God Bless my Priest but no matter what he is a guy. I asked what would be appropriate to wear for the ceremony and his response? “Just something formal” when I asked him to elaborate he said, “Just something that is nice and formal”

So I have been looking at dresses online to try and find something “Nice and formal” without breaking my wallet (hopefully for under $70) I can’t help but wonder, Why are all these dresses so short! I look up formal dresses and it seems like they barley cover the girls butt. All I want is a nice dress, probably about tea length but it seems like my options are long or short. Since I am tall knee length dresses look really short on me

The worst part is the fact that they make you pay $300 for a dress the length of a pillow case. Why are clothes getting so much more expensive and so much more reveling?

So does anyone have any idea where I can get a “nice and formal” dress thats not going to break my bank? I would prefer a store where I can go in and try it on or a place online with an easy return policy (i.e not ebay)

Macy has a few different clothing lines that are conservative and most of the stores have a large dress departments. I don’t know if they have Dillards in California or not, but that’s usually my first stop for a formal dress. They do have a website, but you aren’t as likely to get the clearance prices.

Thank you for your suggestion!

When Father said formal I pretty much figured something like a prom dress or a dress you would wear to a formal. I found a beautiful white tea length dress on David’s Bridal website but since its a wedding dress its out of my price range.

On another note I have trouble understanding why anyone would want to get married in a short white dress. On top of that why pay $500 for a short white dress you can get at wal-mart for $10?

Everything I’ve ever purchased at Davids Bridal has been of poor quality. I’ve been a bride’s main a few times and I wish people would quit sending me there. I always feel taken advantage of because of their high prices and low quality.

i have always found with David’s Bridal the better quality stuff is the other brands they stock like Michael Angelo or Olga. The David’s Bridal dresses themselves felt like there were going to rip when I tried them on. Even there new “Vera Wang” dresses are so flimsy. I do love there clearance section though. My mother found her wedding dress for $40 in a David’s Bridal clearance section.

My wedding dress (that I never got to wear because of… well its a long story) is from David’s Bridal. It was passed down from a friend. I have considered wearing it but am hesitant for two reasons 1. Is it even appropriate? Its conservative but its a wedding dress and its very obviously a wedding dress. 2. my second worry is I don’t even know if it still fits.

it does not even have to be an actual dress
a suit, perhaps dressier than an ordinary business suit with more elegant fabric, color and cut, is always considered proper for any but the most formal big-bang wedding.

Have you thought about a consignment shop?? You can get the quility you want at a fraction of the cost.

Does anyone think it would be wrong to wear an actual wedding dress? I mean I was thinking of trying to find a plain white dress to wear but now I am starting to think about possibly my wedding dress if I can’t find anything else. My only problem with my wedding dress is that its very obvious its a wedding dress. Its a ball gown style Ivory dress with beading and a small bow on the back. I wouldn’t be wearing a veil with it. Is that weird?

You can if you want to. I wore a wedding dress at my convalidation, DH had a tux with tails. It was fun; probably the only time we’ll ever be able to dress up that much!

Call me ignorant but what is that?
A consignment shop is a place where people sell their used clothing. Every consignment store I have visited is VERY picky about what they will accept to sell in their store and only takes good quality fashionable items. The seller typically makes a percentage off of the final sale price. I have been to a few when we were looking for prom dresses. There were lots of bridesmaid and formal dresses to choose from and many in the price range you are seeking. Typically consignment stores are not chains (but some are like Plato’s Closet where I live). Check your yellow pages or google for consignment stores in your area. Good luck!

Yes, great things to be found on consignment, but don’t overlook Goodwill, or St. Vincent’s or whatever you have in your town. My 21 year old daughter LOVES to get a bargain and laughs inside when people compliment her on her clothes, because only she knows how little she paid for them. And keep going back, they get “new” things in every week.

We also have a formal shop in our area that has gently worn formal wear for sale. Let’s face it, most people won’t wear things more than once if it is for a wedding or other formal affair. So there are barely worn things available. Check the yellow pages for somewhere near you.

I think wearing your wedding dress is a lovely idea; lucky you for getting to wear it twice with the same guy!

Oh okay I didn’t know that what its called. lol I love Good Will. We also have a Salvation Army thats great.

I bought a nice white suit. I never had a wedding dress, not the first time, not the second time. Oh well. I did get to wear the suit at least a couple of times besides our wedding.

Sometimes I get wistful, especially when I watch “Say Yes to the Dress,” but oh well.

I say wear what you want, and if you want to wear your dress again, do it! But, if you really want to find something new, then I’m sure you can.

👍

I’m not sure the priest actually meant formal in the sense that most women (and the rest of the fashion world) consider formal. Sunday wear, nothing fancier than Easter Sunday for sure.

I wore a dress that I wear to church all the time. It was a very cozy, relaxed affair in the chapel, and I would have felt out of place with anything dressier than an Easter Sunday worthy dress or suit.

Consignment shops are great! I’ve found all my nicest clothes there. One example was a Ralph Lauren tweed suit that I saw in Macy’s for $400 and found 3 months later at the consignment store for $50. 👍

I’ve also bought all my floor-length formal dresses at consignment stores. They usually stock name brands, and I’ve never paid more than $30 for a dress. Things might be a bit tougher if you are outside the typical size ranges, but even then I’ve noticed that some shops are stocking some non-traditional sizes (petite, larger women’s sizes, etc).

Best of luck! No need to spend tons of money on a dress, just find something you like. 😉

I wore my wedding dress for my Convalidation. 🤷 For the wedding I wore flowers in my hair, for the Convalidation I don’t think I wore anything on my head or in my hair. I don’t remember, I will have to look at the pictures. And yes, my dress was a Wedding dress with a capital “W.”
