Dressing up as the opposite sex

Hey Y’all,

I just wanted to take a moment to ask if this is a mortal sin or not. I’ve heard in the Bible before, and obviously with a ton of people coming out as transgender or dressing up as the opposite sex, that it is a mortal sin to do so. With that idea in mind, I am going to be making a spoof/parody series with my brother of this crime drama called Criminal Minds. I’m playing 3 characters and my brother is playing the other 3. I have the role of 2 female characters and 1 male, and to play him, I kinda have to get into the male mentality, (not to mention I have a full outfit I have to wear for him that includes a tie.) Although, he’s not the manliest character and he’s a pretty big nerd too, lol. Anyways, since it’s only for the purpose of entertainment, (similar to how sometimes people play the opposite sex in a play,) I was thinking it probably wouldn’t be a mortal sin, but I just wanted to know what you all think or know about it. Also, my mom hasn’t spoken up about it, but I figured if it was bad to do she would have.
 
As part of a theatrical performance, its not a moral problem at all.

When Shakespeare’s plays were in first run, men always did the female parts in Romeo & Juliet, etc. Its not a sin at all.
 
No, as mentioned above as part of a skit or something that would not be inherently sinful.

When I was a kid, many years ago, Flip Wilson had a highly rated show, and one of the regular comedy skits, Wilson donned ladies clothes. Similarly, in the top rated “Beverly Hillbillies” program, Max Baer Jr. played Jethrine Bodine, Jethro’s sister.

I never heard any warnings against it, and those were days when the TV industry listened to clergy.
 
well tomorrow i know what im doing, im dressing up as a sexually confused artifically intelligent self aware robot that wants to be human and after becoming human dresses up as the opposite sex and wishes to become an artificially intelligent self aware robot again.

Assuming that you’re decently covered, it’s not the clothing that the church considers a sin in this era. It’s the underlying sexual actions or intent to actually be a different gender (not just play one for the length of a show) that is the concern of the Church.

If you’re dressing up simply as a costume for a play, a film, etc. then you have no intent to use the outfit in order to get sex partners or actually become a male.
 
Deuteronomy is no longer the governing law of the Church.

If it was, then the man in a dress who I saw at Mass and rosary last year would have been asked to leave.

I also probably would have been thrown out numerous times for wearing the trouser suits I used to wear to work.

A man - in a dress - saying the rosary ? ? That’s bad.
There has to be a dress code.
You don’t have to be Moses - to be offended by that.

What do you tell your Catholic son - who’s six ? ( who obviously sees him. )

Honestly it baffles me how much people are stuck on the roles of gender in the sense of how a person is treated socially. One often brought up is loss of reproduction, no one seems all to concerned about people who get vasectomies or choose not to have kids. Fetishism may be a factor in some cases, but living out in the world socially as a difference sex is not an easy thing and is an entirely different thing. The mythical bathroom rape is another, has any one seen many if any documented cases? Rapist choose secluded areas and date rape, which happens frequently, is massively played down.

Functionally yes, there are two basic sexes. But there many things medical and emotionally (and even physically) that blur that line. Where’s the sin in wanting to take on a choice of social role created by society? Can’t we have people with a penis inhabit what is considered more of a female role and yet be open to fulfilling the reproductive role of a man and the opposite?

I tell him that’s the man’s business, that at one time all men wore “dresses” (in fact he might think Jesus wore a dress or maybe was even in a bathrobe if he saw him today), but if I ever see HIM in a tank top in Mass we’re having words no matter how old he is.

Good grief, I was at Mass and saying the Rosary, not sticking my face up close and personal into his to see if he had makeup on. The only reason I noticed him at all was he happened to be in the pew right across the aisle from me.

I also didn’t notice whether he was carrying a purse or find out if he called himself Johnny or Joanie.
