Dressing up for Church?

I keep saying to myself I will go anyways, but I am afraid I will offend some people. Everyone gets so dressed up.

and no, I am not going out to buy a wardrobe for mass.

Do you think I should still go?

I can only tell you why I my family and I dress up for mass. It’s because of the true presence of god within the Eucharist and showing reverance and respect for the house of God. Its just our way of showing respect for the church.

Go to mass. The alternative is mortal sin.

I ride a sportbike - and yes, I will even ride it to church. If people don’t like it, tough - at 40 MPG, that’s my way of doing my patriotic duty and sticking it to OPEC.

Having your bike parked outside of church might also have the effect of leading other men to church - and it might keep some of the younger male teens and pre-teens interested.

As long as it is neat clothing, I have no problem with it. I’m the polo shirt (or my CSBA t-shirt)/jeans type myself under my Joe Rockets. I don’t know if Seminarian Matt and Gregory Palamas realize that when riding a bike you dress for safety and not for proving some fashion statement.

I would definately go to mass, believe you me. Some of the people in our church are dressed to the nines, others just wear their jeans and shirts. There is one guy we think he is homeless and he comes exactly the same way everyweek and believe me he is dressed the best he can for mass and he comes. I wouldn’t ever think about the way somebody comes to mass because Jesus Loves Us. The way we are, all Catholic and we all want to go to mass so please come back to mass don’t worry about the tatoos because many people have them all over and they don’t worry about them. Please come back soon.:o

Our current pastor has tattoos on both of his lower arms. http://www.frterryfulton.org/images/ftsj250.jpg

Our previous pastor rode a motorcycle as does one of the priests at the high school I work at.

I live in a rural area and it is not uncommon to see jeans and boots in church. Shirts range from t-shirts to polo shirts to casual button up shirts.

Come to church! God cares more about you being at church than that you are wearing boots, jeans and a T-shirt.
 
I hope you just come to church, don’t worry about the clothes unless you are able to change. Come to mass and celebrate it with us.
 
Well, an update. I went to confession yesterday for the first time in over 30 years.

I will be going to mass this morning at 8 am. I will be riding my Indian too.

I found a black polo shirt. Everyone here helped me get back to my faith.
 
Welcome back my friend. I hadn’t gone to confession for 25 years and when I did it was like a big weight fell right off my back.
Now, the best advice I can give you is to pray regularly, go to Mass and communion and always be careful.
We have a lot of bikers in my area and last year two of them were killed by a stupid woman who was driving impaired. She was found not guilty (don’t get me started). I pray for them every week.

I think you were dressed perfectly fine for church. After all, I have never seen a depiction of Jesus with a tie.
 
I wish we could get past the “what everyone’s wearing” thing and get back to the true purpose of going to Mass…to celebrate what Jesus did for us…no matter how we are dressed.

I rejoice at your return to the Church! We all benefit when someone comes back. The Body of Christ increases!

My husband returned to the Church a few months before he died. He had been away from the Sacraments for forty years. I never saw him so happy and at peace as when he finally went to the Sacraments. He had an awesome death, surrounded by all our eight children.
 
I read your posts last night, and did actually find a tear or two streaming down my face when I read that you had gone to confession. I am so happy that you are finding this peace. I hope that you continue to stay close to God and to the sacraments.

I agree with the no laughing and perfectly fine for Mass part but I am not a motorcycle person:p. Quite frankly the thought of riding on one scared me when I was young and now that I am older and my hips and knees don’t work all that well, I don’t think I could enjoy a ride on one:rolleyes:. Now if you had a sidecar, maybe I would join you for a trip around the block.

The only thing I would caution you on is that with a black shirt, you might be mistaken for a priest!
