Depends -

Did you slam it all at once then get on the road?
Had you eaten anything beforehand?
Are you a “light weight” with alcohol?
Are you light in weight and can’t consume much without feeling it?
Did you drink the one beer over a long length of time?

Way too many things to consider to answer this question.

No, so long as you have not seriously hampered your driving abilities. It is not the act of drinking followed by the act of driving that is wrong. It is the endangerment you put yourself and others in when you are too impared to drive safely. When you drive drunk, you are playing Russian Roulet. Maybe you make it home safe, maybe you don’t. Maybe you hit someone, maybe you don’t. To take life so lightly does not give respect for the life God gave to each one of us!

just drank it normally, actually didn’t even finish it. But I knew I was capable of driving, but can’t drunk people claim the same thing? I was just wondering because I was reseraching sins at catholicparents.org/oxcart/Examination%20of%20Conscience.pdf and it says under Mortal sins “Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol” So I’m wondering, does that mean legally under the influence, or in the sense that you drink it, you are under the influence.

This is why you should know beforehand how much alcohol you can responsibly handle.

If you are 17 years old (assuming by your name) and living in the US or another country with a similar drinking age (another assumption), then drinking the beer was a sin because you broke the law.

Of course, one or both of those assumptions could be wrong.

If you are of legal age, then I do not believe it was a sin. I doubt that one alcoholic beverage will make any adult so intoxicated that he/she loses the ability to drive.

Of course I could be wrong. 🙂

I was underage (not 17 though) and did confess underage drinking, but now I’m wondering if I should confess driving after drinking that beer, even though I knew I was capable of driving. ahh!

Some European Countries, like Norway, have such low limits on blood alcohol content that drinking a single beer immediately before driving can put an average man over the legal limit. Being caught driving over the legal limit results in more than the slap on the wrist people here in the States get for first, second, and sometimes even third offense. If you are 17, you have no business drinking away from home and in the absence of your parents.

uhh, yeah I realize that. I’m 20 and all I’ve ever drunk was 1 can of beer at a friend’s house, ever. And I dumped out the last 1/3 of it because I had had enough. I realize it was wrong and I confessed it. I always keep myself away from situations where alcohol would come into play. I’m just wondering if that would be considered driving under the influence when I knew I was capable of driving.

I just did a blood alcohol test on the internet and according to my sex and weight and the 1 beer I drank in 1 hour, my BAC was
.002, and .04 is considered getting risky. This can’t be a sin, can it (not the drinking, the driving)?

I personally think everyone should draw the line at NO drinking whatsoever after having even just one drink. I know people who say one drink every two hours is ok. So if they had 5 drinks in 10 hours of partying, it’s ok to drive.

There are too many drunk drivers still out there. I really think if you are going to drink, don’t plan on driving. EVER.

According to this site
intox.com/wheel/drinkwheel.asp

A male or female weighing 150 pounds who consumed 5 beers over 10 hours would have a Blood Alcohol content of 0.000 g per 210 liters of breath.

that’s the site I used too. I would’ve been .002 when I drove. This happened last fall. I have been to confession many times since then and confessed underage drinking, but never thought of confessing driving after consuming alcohol until I read it on a Catholic site the other day. I can’t remember what I was thinking at the time, I don’t know if I ever thought I was committing a mortal sin in either the drinking or the driving…I can’t remember. I’m sure the Lord has probably forgiven me for it, but there’s so many arguments you can make back and forth in your head “I need to go to confession to have peace of mind”…“But I’ve been many times since and the priest tells me all my sins have been forgiven and have faith in the Lord”…“But I need to err on the safe side”…I don’t know, maybe I’m being a bit scrupulous. I worry that if I confess sins that I may have committed almost a year ago, that if I get into that habit I’ll start recalling all kinds of stuff and make my life miserable.

If your conscience is bothering you on this then confess it.

Romans 8 and 14

If your conscience in not bothering you on this, then ask the Holy Spirit to guide you. It is the Holy Spirit’s role to convict us of sin.

But isn’t it harmful for the scrupulous to confess doubtful sins?

Dude you can’t commit a sin retroactively. If you did something sinful and at the time you did not know it was sinful you cannot become guilty for that particular act in the future. In legal situations you can be found guilty of things you did not know were wrong at the time you did them, but in God’s system it doesn’t work that way

In my opinion you need to find a priest who knows how to work with people who have scruples. Once you find one (just ask him) accept what he tells you to do. Do not second guess him!

Excellent advice! It applies to your question in the other thread, too, OP!
