Hello everyone! I had an awakening to the faith about 18 months ago and now strive every day to live for God (some days I think I do well, other times I fail, thank God for Jesus right?!). I’m 26 years old and unfortunately, most of my friends don’t practice the faith and as a consequence, most of their Friday and Saturday night rituals include going out to the bar and getting drunk. Now I don’t really go to bars very often now. However, there are a few friends I only see about twice a year and my seeing them basically depends on my hanging out with them at a bar. I have heard different things involving drinking and whether it is a sin. I have come to believe that having 2 or 3 drinks is okay. Afterall, I can’t reach out to my friends if I’m not there (yes I could not drink I suppose but it is very difficult for me to completely abstain). So I guess my question is, is my behavior sinful? Am I edging on the border of sin? Or if I’m trying to reach out to my friends (and yes, I do talk about my faith when I am with them) acceptable? Am I being a little too scrupulous? All help is greatly appreciated. It is very hard to have 99% of your friends be heathens. I’m trying to make new, faithful friends of course and it’s working but I can’t just get rid of my hedonistic friends. Gosh it’s so hard growing up now adays!!!

Drinking per se is NOT a sin otherwise that would mean Jesus sinned!
Drinking to excess is sinful.

CCC 2290 The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine. Those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others’ safety on the road, at sea, or in the air.

Be careful. At about your age, my late DH also believed having 2 or 3 drinks a day was not bad. Each day. Every day. On stressful days, he would have 3 or 4. The older he got, seemingly the more stress he had. He justified it by telling me he was discussing religion at the bar (he was a very faithful practicing Catholic in the early years of our marriage). He continued to tell me this, and I (sort of) believed it, because his behavior (for the most part) was “normal”. He never was a stumbling, slurring drunk. I would meet some people he discussed religion with, because they actually came to church because of him! They all told me how wonderful my DH was. He died of alcoholism 6 months ago. At the end he was consuming 14-15 drinks PER DAY (all hidden from me, because he would go “to work” in the morning, but then go on “sales calls” starting around 10 am, end his “sales calls” around 3, give himself a few hours to “pull it together” (which he did amazingly well), come home around 6, and tell me he had just stopped for happy hour for “a couple” on his way home “from work”. He was in commission sales, and had built up quite a renewal base, so the income was always there, so I had no reason to think he was not “at work”. Now he is dead. So BE CAREFUL, especially if you find it difficult to abstain now at the tender age of 26. Minister, but don’t get sucked in and down.

Amazingly, DH only had one DWI…I am still horrified thinking of what could have happened. When he got his DWI, the officer administered the breathalyzer 3 times, because he could not believe DH was as coherent as he was with a 0.25 BAC. He was walking, talking, carrying on a normal conversation. What alerted the officer to the problem was he was driving 10 miles below the speed limit.

So again, BE CAREFUL. Alcohol can get the best of them.

A few drinks isn’t sinful. Especially only a couple times of year.

Catholic90- I definitely appreciate the warnings and I am sorry for your loss. What I meant was that I find it hard to abstain because of the peer pressure involved, not with the actual alcohol itself. I would certainly be more than okay with never drinking again, but when I am around friends that are drinking, it is difficult to abstain. I think more importantly for me is the issue of finding friends that are of like mind. Sadly, there are many hedonists in the world. And my friends are actually “good” people. They generally are nice and have good morals (for the most part). But they just don’t have a relationship with Jesus. Now that’s a huge BUT, but a lot of people think they are doing good just because they are nice. It is difficult now to find people my age that share the same passion about God as I do. There are people out there, but I also feel like I am drawn to my current friends and I am obligated to hang out with them.

Drinking alcohol is not sinful.

But one needs to be guided by the virtue of temperance.

One can sin venially by drinking too much.

And if one gets drunk --looses ones reason --it is grave matter for mortal sin.

Also if it becomes a near occasion for some other mortal sin it can be sinful too…

As to your friends…of course do not engage in any sinful things…and do not approve or cooperate in such…or give bad example or the appearance of such…or go to not good places with them etc. (think of the early Christians who would not engage in what society was up to…they lived differently)

Perhaps go out for pizza or something instead?

(and the question of drinking and driving of course looms big too…for grave matter…and one does not want to cooperate etc in this either…)

How much is too much though? Are you talking about tipsy, or are you talking about completely wated to the point where you don’t know what you’re doing and won’t remember what you did?

By being “tispy” and driving one commits sin. And is normally avoidable as well.
Waking the next morning thinking what did i do last night, that too is a mortal sin.

Where would getting “functionally” drunk. straggering drunk but still know what’s happening fit in. Say on an annual basis, very little to drink during the rest of the yr.

I never suggested driving while tipsy (which is a horrible deed that endangers the lives of others).

Yes one should not drive and drink…for myself I will make sure there is enough time between the wine and the road.

That can be a warning sign…though for mortal sin one needs full knowledge and complete consent…and it could hypothetically happen that a person did not realize what was going on…say they were new to drinking and did not realize how things work etc…(this is not an “excuse” of course…but it could happen…).

One should not get in any way drunk…ever.

Not even on Tuesday.

Sorry.
By being tipsy one puts themself at risk of sinning, perhaps my tispy and your tipsy are on different levels.

It’s cool. I was only asking if being tipsy was a sin. Just tipsy in and of itself, obviously driving while tipsy is very bad. If so, what kind (veinal or grave/mortal)?

I would think being tipsy would not be a sin. For instance, I had 2 drinks tonight in 2 hours. I’m a 200 lb. man so I believe I can have almost 6 drinks before I legally am over the limit. I was by no means drunk but those 2 drinks did affect me. I think anyone can be tipsy even after 1 drink, even after a few sips.

I have to say though, I can’t ever envision going back to a bar anytime soon. The girls were all dressed wearing nothing, and being a 26 year old man, that can be very tempting. You have to always protect your eyes.

In these matters, I think, these things are very subjective whether they are sins or not, but that is why we are given a conscience. If you aren’t being temperate then you will know it. Thanks for the help everyone.

Yes I think by the time one is “tipsy” one is well into the area of at least venial sin.

Read the above.

(though it can also be more sinful …even mortal due to say one is likely to go home with some member of the opposite sex or something)

One should not drive when tipsy…one should not drive and drink.

Yes I think driving tipsy would be in the grave area …one should never drive that way.

(grave=mortal by the way…same thing)

Drinking isn’t a sin, just like eating isn’t a sin. What’s sinful is a lack of moderation, or gluttony. With that said, there will be times that we eat a bit more than usual; special occasions and holidays, for instance. In the same way, we might drink a bit more than we normally would on certain occasions. So long as this does not impair your reason, and you have full control over your faculties, this is not sinful. In our overly puritanical culture, we have a great scrupulosity regarding things like alcohol and tobacco, viewing them almost as a moral vice. This is absurd: they are little enjoyments in life that need to be kept in their proper place. When we let them begin to control us, and we find ourselves unable to moderate our indulgence in them, then we need to get ourselves back under control.

Drinking is absolutely not a sin.
You can be smart about it when going out drinking. What I used to do is have a couple of bottles of water or soda drinks before going out so you’re not thirsty or empty. Then make every other drink a non-alcoholic drink, that will push out the time and keep you from absorbing a lot of alcohol. Of course, stop after two or three alcoholic drinks and the same number of non-alcoholic.

An old priest once said something like…forgive us Lord for loving things we should only use, and using those we should only love.

Peace

Thought I’d put in my two cents worth…a true friend will be a friend ouside the drinking scene. If the “friendship” is dependent on getting together for drinks, it isn’t a friendship at all. “Drinking buddies” at best.
