Drinking from the cup of wine

A family member said they could not drink from the cup of wine that everyone else drinks from . What would be a good answer for them? Needless to say they are not Catholic. I had told them that we believe it is really the Blood of Christ and He wouldn’t let us get sick from it.
 
The Precious Blood does also keep the appearance, accidents, of wine. It is not somehow supernaturally repellent to germs. When we are sick we should refrain from the Chalice so we do not spread our illnesses.
 
He’s not allowed to participate in communion if he’s not Catholic. And actually, according to St. Paul, people were getting sick from unworthily consuming the body and blood of Christ (1 Corinthians 11:30). I have a friend whose conversion was sparked when he unworthily took communion as a lapsed Catholic and got really sick.

I don’t know if this part is true or not, having seen it debated quite a lot before. Personally, I’m not inclined to believe it.

But I will say priests drink after everyone else has all the time, and my priests don’t seem to get sick any more frequently than others.
 
If your family member was Catholic so that this was actually an issue, he would, I hope, be aware that he’s not required to receive under both forms. If he prefers, he can receive only the host and still receive the body, blood, soul, and divinity of our Lord.
 
It’s personal choice. And the Chalice of Precious Blood ( as it is correctly called). IS not offered at all Masses.

It’s ok to only take the Host.

Both the Blood and Body of Christ are in the host and Chalice. Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ

I continue to be amazed that people believe that the PRecious Blood of Christ will make you sick.
 
The Bishop of the diocese out here suspended the use of the Chalice during the massive flu outbreaks. Wine won’t kill virii, wine may or may not kill bacteria or fungi depending on the alcohol volume or the tolerance/resistance of the critters.
 
I know being non Catholic they cannot recieve Communion , but they were meaning that they couldn’t be a Catholic if thats what was required. But at the same time they were told you can just recieve the host and it would still be good.That you do not have to drink the wine. I was just wondering how to respond to that statement. Non Catholic always have problems with the way we do or say things. N
ot even going into it being a sin to drink!!

You cannot receive either the Body or the Blood as a non-Catholic. They are equally and fully Christ.

A little background… my 25 year old granddaughter had never been in a Catholic Church until my Husband , her Grandfathers ’ funeral and from that day on she hasnt mossed Mass , went thru RCIA and Bible class and came into the Church Saturday !She was Baptised and made her First Communion
It was her Mother that made the statement , my son is not a practicing Catholic even tho he was raised Catholic.
 
Somehow I am being misunderstood. I know non Catholics can not receive anyway shape or form of the Holy Communion. They didn’t say they wanted to. Just that if to be Catholic they couldn’t drink from the same cup everyone else did . They have no intention of joining for several reasons but the above as one.
 
I don’t think people believe it will,in itself, make them sick. However, it does not magically kill germs/bacteria on the chalice that can cause illness.

A) non-catholics should not be be partaking of communion (in any form) at catholic liturgies

B) the germ-phobia flu thing is over, at least in my diocese, I had’ve had a nice sip of consecrated wine at Easter communion today; NO FEAR

I thought the same thing before I became Catholic. It seemed unsanitary - but at my first communion, I had no hesitation. It’s all about what your heart desires.
 
At least her mother is thinking enough about it to discuss it and form early opinions.

That’s great. Hopefully it will bear fruit in time

I think most of us follow your advice; by not taking the precious blood when we are ill. However, most Catholics are not doctors, so they could unknowingly have infectious germs when they take the cup.

This is where we need faith, I just take the cup knowing that it is the saving blood of our Lord. I never look for signs of sickness in the people who have gone before me in the queue. It would be a pointless exercise, because I cannot judge their health.
