Holy water is just that–the devil flees from ;it as we would from poison.A great custom, wonderful! Do you drink the miraculous water from the spring in Lourdes? Many do and it has wonderful healing properties.
Here is a true story,a few years back I wanted to do a private retreat at a monastery,it turned out that the main place was closed. However they said a small house on the property was run by a few lay persons. They were wayout new age Buddists dressed as ''catholics" .They even went to the trouble of putting ''holy water" outside the meditation place–they told me that the cat drank out it.I had a small bottle of blessed holy water that I brought.

.A few days later they invited me to their meditation night, what I did was to pour my holy water into the bowl that the cat drank out of- I suspect that “their holy water” was not blessed by a priest".I also put some into the boiling urn where everyone made their hot drinks.I also sprinkled some around the place when the people were not there.I never though much more about it.I made my “meditation” with them in silence and eyes closed.I mainly prayed to St.Michael the Archangel,St.Benedict,Our Lady–after a long time–maybe an hour I opened my eyes–the male person (his ex wife and a feral religious sister also were there) pointed out to me the cat–it was spralled out dead about four feet in front of me.I never said anything–later that night I overheard that the male fellow ( an ex religious brother-who had feathers hanging in his ute, with rainbow warrior written on the glass shield) say to his ex wife that he had stomic pains! They cancelled the next nights “meditation” night–I wonder why?

I also prayed that the place would be closed,God answered this prayer and the main retreat centre closed this place down…So holy water is a great sacramental–use it.As for the story well I just ponder the power of Christ.!

That’s great! I’ve drunk holy water and used it in many ways for protection. Actually, when I was ‘away’ from the faith, and practicing divination, I used to sprinkle myself and my candles with holy water to protect myself from whatever I might be inviting in (I was trying so hard not to be Catholic, but I couldn’t shake the feeling I was doing something wrong and dangerous.) It definately protected me in a few situations that I can recall!

You are correct Masha–your guardian angel must have inspired you to protect you from the evil spirits.I was never taught to sip or drink Holy Water–it is something that just came to me.I once attended a funeral of a priest, instead of each person putting some soil or rose petals into the grave;each person was handed a small bottle of Holy Water, with a little opening and they sprinkled the grave with it.

I think it is a good idea to take some holy water with you when one enters a cemetery and to sprinkle the grave site of loved ones with it,occasionally. Many evil spirits do hang-out in the cemetery

.I attended an annual Mass at the local cemetery, afterwards I saw an Orthodox Priest going around to each gravesite, people were having a meal around their dear ones graves. He incensed the grave, prayed a blessing over the food and then poured some drink onto the grave and broke off some food.I had seen food being left there ;but there was like a union of the living and the dead.It was not a custom that I am used to but I know many cultures and faiths leave food for the dead.

One person told me that they used to sprinkle holy water outside an adult sex shop.not long afterwards it was closed down. These are all sacrmentals that the Church gives, very powerful especially if combined with prayer. The Eastern Churches have a lot to teach us.
